Posted January 7, 200916 yr THe cock is Tweet Tweet who has used to be Maesie's boy and has moved here to get a bit of 'action' Sorry for the bad photo but this is the hen who was Angelic Vampyres, unfortunately she wouldn't sit still in the breeding cage for a photo. She is a skyviolet cinnamon opaline (the photo has washed out the violet) I did have the hen with the infamous Ozzie but he wasn't doing anything so I thought I'd test the hen with another boy and give Ozzie some aviary time. They have seven eggs, three are candling fertile, two are too young to tell and two are clear. She may still lay more eggs as she only layed the last one yesterday I'd love to know what others think of them as a pair, I wasn't thinking much about showness when I paired them but now I'm starting to think they aren't too bad as a pair. January 7, 200916 yr They look all right to me I am learning quickly that its not all about looks, but about genetics. A really good looking bird can produce lousy chicks and a really plain looking bird can produce ripper chicks.... you never know what your going to get all the best with them and i look forward to seeing what they produce
January 7, 200916 yr Author I am finding that too Liv, at the very least I hope there might be a few nice babies to be held over as future stockbirds for next year.
January 7, 200916 yr I have heard the same thing Liv said not only in birds but dogs too so you may just have a winner in those genes . Good luck on your pairing.
January 7, 200916 yr That's right it's what's in their background but you can do good with visual looks too, They look alright from my computer, good luck
January 8, 200916 yr They look like a nice pair, Ones that should produce good stock birds to continue on with if you are looking to show . Keep in mind to cull hard though , this is the only way foward , pick your best 2 birds and use these for your stock , Try not to pair Cinn to Cinn and Opaline to Opaline , if you pair back to Normals ( As you have done ) you will produce a mix of varieties and this will help with your size , spot and Feather features. Goodluck with the breeding.
January 8, 200916 yr Author I am just getting to the point now Lochlan where I know what I want and don't want in my birds. Until now I hadn't culled a single show type as I needd the numbers but despite only having about 15 show birds(atleast until my new lot arrive on Saturday) I have culled two which I felt were actually not even worth keeping as stock birds. It's a tough thing to cull your first show birds but t's the only way forward. Incidentally both those birds are actually opaline, but they have lovely clear heads wthout any dirtiness which is why he probably doesn't come across that way n the front on photo. As I said they were just an experimental par anyway so if they thrpow somethng nice it will be a bonus. I actually don't like opaline in my birds at all and long term I hope to breed without it completely but at this stage a nice bird is a nice bird even if it is an opalne
February 9, 200916 yr Author Well on one of the hot days she smashed all her eggs and threw the out of the nest which were about two weeks developed at the time. She seems to have gone out of condition now but prior to that she layed two eggs on the bottom of the cage which I've fostered in with a reliable sitter, the first looks fertile the second still looked clear a few days ago and I've misplaced my torch so haven't been able to check since
February 9, 200916 yr We got some smashed eggs over here as well. If you are not planning on putting her back down can I get her back as Pippi now has a cock that he is intrested in putting her back down again if she comes into condition in the next month otherwise we might wait and see what happens
February 9, 200916 yr Author Sure If you need the space I don't mind leaving her where she is until she starts to get some development starting on her cere and then give you a yell, she's straight pink at the moment, not crusty at all.
February 9, 200916 yr Cool will work to grab her back when we get a chance, your right about space here at the moment, i have no avairy as it has Trish's ringnecks in it and the green cheeks are exploding but this week should get both new avairys up which will free up some space
