Posted January 6, 200916 yr I took the advice given on a pervious post and divided into 4 sections with only one pair of breeding birds in each one. The tiel cages I still have to wait to mount on the outside of the cage once the chicks fledge, but this is a start... I hope a good one?? Tell me what you think? These are my eight budgie breeding cages with 2 extra "nursery cages" (top and side). These are my lovebirds, tiels, and non-mating keet cages (finches and extra cages on top) This is just a shot of the whole set up (keep in mind this is in my house in the front part of my living room) So any suggestions or corrections you think I should take into consideration? If I change one more thing my husband is going to kill me, but I'm trying to set up the best I can. Hope everyone had a wonder and safe new year.
January 6, 200916 yr Looks wonderful, I was wondering how you get into the cages to put food in and out etc, as I can't see any doors? I'll have the cute looking doggy on the couch too thanks very much!! Do you use normal rope for your rope perches, they seem expensive to buy the real thing. Looks great, well done! I bet you could just sit there with a cuppa all day on the sofa and watch them now.
January 6, 200916 yr If you look closely Hills you can see that the side panels have a little hook on them holding them closed
January 6, 200916 yr Looks really good especially for the budgies. BUT if I was a tiel I would want more space than that. Like dividing a unit into three vertically for the tiels instead of four. Edited January 6, 200916 yr by KAZ
January 6, 200916 yr HEY!! That's garage shelving with one shelf upside down on top of another isn't it? That's brilliant, I've got a shed full of that shelving. Hmmmn, now you've got me thinking!!
January 6, 200916 yr You can buy that shelving from 2nd hand office furniture shops with steel backs and sides quite cheaply. Then you could just buy those breeding cage fronts with doors in them for one side and wire on the front and you'd have a completely steel aviary or breeding boxes. Hmmn time to phone around I think!
January 6, 200916 yr Author The doors are on the sides. The full panels are doors on hinges with hooks. Food and water are kept close to the doors for easy refills. They are storage unit shelves I bought at Lowes. They have wire screen attached to the front with wire twistss and boards on the back. I use fishtank background to add color. The rope I use is "real" rope from Lowes, not nylon, but it feels like baler twine. I forget the name of it. Most of the toys are home made out of shoe laces, cards, wood figures, beads, bells, etc... All in all I think it's a good set up now. I agree with KAZ, I'd love to have more room for the tiels, but as you can see what I have already takes up the entire front of my living room. Making the large unitl into 4 units gave me just enough room for ALL my birds (except the finches and nursery birds) without the need for additional cages. But getting the tiels better set up will happen in the near future... getting there, slowly, but surely... money talks!!!!! LOL Looks really good especially for the budgies. BUT if I was a tiel I would want more space than that. Like dividing a unit into three vertically for the tiels instead of four.I agree 100% with you KAZ, but unfortunately the way these units come are in 2 equal halves. The center cross beam is actually what holds the upper half and the lower half together so dividing into three equal parts is not an option with this unit. I can do two small units and one big one, I can do four small ones, or I can do two big ones, but three just can't work. I wish it could.
January 6, 200916 yr I think you have done a wonderful job, although the noise - must be deafening. Must make it hard to have conversation - LOL
January 6, 200916 yr Author I think you have done a wonderful job, although the noise - must be deafening. Must make it hard to have conversation - LOL Honestly, that is the only issue. I usually home with the kids during the day and by night fall when we settle to watch TV, relax, bedtime, etc... they are covered over and all is quiet. SO... all in all it's not bad if you don't mind "chatter" ALL DAY LONG!!!! If I have my way (and the money to do so) we will be putting on an addition to the house by late summer. If that happens the bedroom on the first floor will be turned into my "bird room" and the much needed room needed will be given and the noise won't be so bad anymore. PS Thanks for all the compliments from everyone... if feels good to get a pat on the back once in a while. I know there's always something someone would do different or something I could have done better, but with time, money and man power I did the best I could. So thanks again. January 7, 200916 yr Congratulations! It's fantastic. One question though- Why would you want to keep your birds indoors away from the elements?
January 7, 200916 yr That is an awesome set up!! Well done I could imagine the amount of mess they all make too :party0011: I love the idea for the rope perches. Just make sure there is at least 1 very sturdy perch in there for mating as if the hen wobbles too much the mating may not complete successfully. Your tiel setup looks good to me. The bigger the better, but there looks like there is a nice amount of room for them.
January 7, 200916 yr Renee where Chrissy lives it is way too cold in winter to have birds in outside aviaries

January 7, 200916 yr Yep they are... She is in the states, and if the birds were outside right now they wouldn't be alive I am guessing... Budgies tend not to like snow
