what i want to know is are they 2 different types of dominant pieds ?

if it wasnt for the iris rings i would have thought mac was rec pied :)

This one is a dominant pied

This one (left) is a Double Factor dominant pied (the dark patch of colour on the rump gives it away)

okay thanks liv , i never even considred mac to be df due to him having so much less markings than raine . until i realised he had iris rings i had thought he was recessive pied :)

so if its all in the rump this boy could be dom df since mum is dom ? as are all brothers and sisters ?

looks rececive to me and iris rings ? well he is to young

I wouldn't say he is a DF dom pied at all. However he does have different markings but is still a dom pied. I've had a mother who's clearflighted produce babies who aren't yet are still dominant pieds, but he's not DF... still SF although not clearflighted.

We had a recent discussion like this that RIPbudgie's brought up to our attention with her bird and she said the only way you can sometimes tell is through breeding.

okay well hes paired up with the violet rec pied hen , so im not going to split them up . if hes double factor would i get any double factor dom pieds or will they all be sf dom pied ?

then mac is masking violet and the hen is visual violet so how will that factor into things ?

If he is a double factor you will have all Single Factor Dominant Pieds because Recessive Pied and Dominant Pied are 2 different genes completely, to get any recessive pied your Dominant Pied would have to be split for recessive pied. If he is a Single Factor Dominant Pied you would expect 50% normals and 50% Dominant Pieds.

then mac is masking violet and the hen is visual violet so how will that factor into things ? Not sure how you know your bird is masking the violet gene? Anyways the Violet gene can be Single Factor and Double Factor.

2 Single Factor Violets = 25% DF Violets, 50% SF Violets, 25% No Violet

2 Double Factors Violets = 100% DF Violets

1 SF x 1 DF Violet = 50% DF, 50% SF Violets
