Posted January 4, 200916 yr Okay, We've (***Liv*** and I) just got a new small 6x4x6 Avery for the quarantined birds (they were lonely in their hot breeding room) and during a visit to a local well known Australian champion show breeder he commented about his tiered perches being a tad close, and at times it causes his birds to pull the feathers out of the birds above them. He made a comment that they should have been wider / more spaced out - but I didn't ask him what they were in his pen, for all I know his measurements were wrong. If you haven't pictured the tired approach, imagine a set of steps with each row being lower and further out than the one above... well I've decided to build one - so does anyone have a set of specs on the angle and the distance of each perch from the previous so that I get it right? Any informative posts and help appreciated.

I agree with this. Measure your bird from head to tip of tail and add an extra 10 centimeters, personally I would double it. The result will be the distance needed between each perch.
January 14, 200916 yr Is there a particluar perch thickness/circumfrence? I am building a new aviary and will be building the perches next.
January 14, 200916 yr Is there a particluar perch thickness/circumfrence? I am building a new aviary and will be building the perches next. When I did my tiered perches I went out and bought different dowel sizes ranging from 1-4cm. Now I am more inclined to add natural branches as perches.

I was wondering about natural branches being used on those tiered perches. I've only ever seen dowel used. I guess it might be difficult to find branches that long of varying circumfrances...

Dowel perches are not bad unless that is all you provide, as long as your provide a variety of perches in your aviary/cage then that is what is most important.

I have at least 8 large long decent branches in my aviary as well as the dowels, so they get lots of exercise for their feet
