July 15, 200915 yr Dave, where do you currently have your breeding cages stashed? are they in a room or something or outside under cover?
July 15, 200915 yr Author I have a double garage - double brick. Presently one side of the garage houses the breeding cages. the other side is for the car. The garage is very big - there is a space at the back where the dogs sleep, plus work benches, plus a dining room table, plus the hot water system, ***, it is huge when I think about it - I will get you a photo. Any reason for the question? Edited July 15, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 15, 200915 yr im just getting an idea of setups and stuff, im in the planning stages of my room on my thread, titled breeeding room/flight area or something. just wondering where you have kept them all this time. a photo sounds good.
July 15, 200915 yr Author it is messy in the garage. there is a lot of stuff in my garage. i would rather have it all outdoors. The other thing is that with the garage, there is no way to really stop mice getting in. If you set up the breeding room correctly, then you can mouse proof it. The birds will have more natural light and I will have the rest of my garage back Edited July 15, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 15, 200915 yr Sounds like a plan. Mouseproofing is very hard. I wouldn't like to try mouseproof our garage either Your breeding room is going to be awesome!
July 21, 200915 yr Author Well, the breeding room is coming along nicely. (let me apologise for the pics, it was getting dark). It is freestanding, has been washed, and now the small amounts of rust have been hit with Killrust. These are the dark sections you can see on the inside walls at the bottom. I am also painting it so it will match the other aviary, and so far one side is done. I have taken some pics on my phone as my camera seems to have died, and I will load these up when i get back - off to dinner at a friend's house. I am taking my nephews to see Harry Potter tomorrow, so the plan is to do some in the morning, then finish it on Thursday. That will mean I am free to go see a kid in the city on Friday, and the birds can go in on the weekend. Here are the current pics The green looks different in all of them. The one below is the closest to the true colour. Edited July 21, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 25, 200915 yr Author Well, the painting of the outside is almost completed. Today's big job was to cut out a gap in concrete to allow excess water to run off and not puddle. Job done. I also washed the rest of the outside of the shed and then painted the ouside, with one small bit to go. i will do that tomorrow. I don't think i will paint the inside. There is little point, and the all it will do is increase the paint smell. So tomorrow I will finish painting the outside, do some repairs on the edges, move it into the right position, dyanbolt it down, attach the internal strips to mouse-proof it, and then add the plastic sheets to the outside to weather proof it. When this is all done, I am going to evaluate what i do in regard to lighting, especially at night time, then it will be good to move birds into. I really do look forward to that day. It seems so far away still, but closer today than it ever has been before.
July 25, 200915 yr Great job Dave Holidays help with being able to do stuff Ken is on holidays next Friday so I can see the flights getting finished
July 25, 200915 yr Author i can do more in the hols, and my dad is a teacher at TAFE, so we both can get in and get it done. Funny thing is that I did a lot of work today - Saturday
July 26, 200915 yr Author pics here This is the channel we had to cut out for water runoff - note the thickness of the concrete and the aviary
July 26, 200915 yr Looks AWESOME Dave!!! i bet you are so happy with how its progressing! We will be painting our birdroom the same green... its a lovely colour!
July 26, 200915 yr Author Ummm Dave you havent finished your job. The aviary is still cockeyed on the slab they say that comedy is under-rated in our society, but I really think that some people think they are funnier tahn they really are - I need to do a bit more to it. I am not painting inside, I need to fix one patch at the back, I need to attached the strips inside to ensure it is mouseproofed, then I need to attached the plastic, then it is good to go
July 26, 200915 yr Well done Dave! You WILL love it once it's finished - just a little bit to go now - and you're birds will be happier for it! By the way, is that eucalyptus green paint you've used?

By the way, is that eucalyptus green paint you've used? I hope they will be happier, they better appreciate it The paint is actually from the group that make killrust. It is an enamel called Killrust WinterGreen.
August 9, 200915 yr Author It has been a little while since I updated this thread. I have finally finished. I painted the shed - well the sides that can be seen anyway, then I covered the wire in plastic, leaving enough space on the side the roof overhangs for air circulation, and today I put the budgies in their breeding cages in there. i am pleased with the result, though it is a little smaller than I have envisaged. Might need to sell some stuff now. We will see. to come soon
