The Creation Of My New Breeding Room

Featured Replies

Couple of options for both lighting and ventillation.

Lighting - you can add a sky light, use windows or install lighting. I am going to have windows, plus I am thinking of adding a skylight set up.

Ventillation - you can add windows higher up to allow air ot flow through, you can install one of these ceiling air vents that spin and let hot air out, some people use air coolers to cool hot breeding rooms, some people have wire screen doors to allow air to flow in. I am lucky as my breeding room is an old aviary, so there are some wire sections already. This will allow some circulation of air and some light, but I will cover part of these with clear plastic to prevent rain.

The other day, the wind and the rain meant that unless yoour aviary was enclosed ina box, water was getting in. No problemw ith water getting in, as long as you can make sure that no bird is effected by a wet area after this occurs.

I've heard really good things about those whirley ceiling vents, wouldn't it help with sucking up and expelling feather dust?

That is good to know. I think they are a great idea and I am not sure why they are not used more often. They will definitely reduce heat and humidity in the room.

Well, as promised. I took some photos. You can see the area where the shed will go, where the grass has been cleared, where it is in relation to the other aviary, and of course, the wonderful new top dreesing provided for my lawn by the preparation of this area.

Will you be reomoving the lattice and brushwood fencing materials ? Reason I ask is, its the favourite place for rodents to nest in, especially around a bird aviary etc :cake:

The fences are all being replaced with Colourbond fencing, just waiting for the neighbours go ahead. The lattice will be removed and the colourbond will go up very soon hopefully. the fences have been an ongoing issue that seems to have been going for years. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later. The lattice will naturally come down before the fences. The lattice serves 2 purposes - it is decorative, but the main purpose is it keeps my dogs in my backyard. Brushwood is not very good in for that purpose.

Well, in other breaking news, I just ordered the conrete for delivery on Friday at 9am. All systems are a go. Weather is meant to be better on Friday as well, bit wet here last couple of days.

I positioned the windows at one end of the aviary.

And the Whirly bird at the oposite end.

This was to give a flow through effect. It also allows me to have an end wall free of windows to place the breeding cabinets.

I was okay with the flow through but not fully happy, so I placed an exhaust fan directly below it and connected it to a temperature sensor. When the temperature goes over 25deg C the air is forced out.

Becareful with sunlights as they can be hot and give hot spots in the aviary. Solatubes can be installed which have built in extraction fans. Positioned well they help with light and ventilation.

I would love to redo my aviary with some of the ideas I now have and seeing the problems I've got.

Looking forweard to seeing how yours go Dave.

It will be nowhere as spectacular as yours or Kaz's. My breeding room will literally be that. it will be used for breeding purposes only. Other birds will still stay in the aviary. That is why the breeding room will be so much smaller than yours or even Kaz's breeding room.

Dave sounds like you have some great ideas and plans for it. :cake:

I see "room for expansion"

in the future of course :cake:

ummmmm that is a delemma... I work hard in my garden and lawn. Having both can be done.

there may be room as you see it Kaz, but look at this grass. how can you not love it?

You can have that grass Dave :cake: and let this one go P1010023.jpg

or you need a bigger house :cake:

Seriously though Dave, a lot of the top show breeder have less space and they still do fine :hb:

honestly, I have thought about the bigger house

Well, tomorrow morning at 9am the truck is comign to bring my concrete. It will take no more than 30 minutes to unload, and then we smooth it over, get it looking pretty, then it will take 4 hours to dry, though I will give it at least 24 hours, if not more, than the new shed can go up.

Now, I know that the best way to do it is to cement the shed down, but I do not want to lose any height on the shed. I will dynabolt it down later, that way I get to keep my shed at its original height, and it all should work out how I want it.

My shed is also dynabolted to the cement slab Dave. Good luck.

New slab was layed, though it is hard to do it properly due to the position of two fences. It is probably not as level or smooth as it could have been, but I am happy with how it turned out. It is the first time I have ever done this, so it is a very good experience.

It is still drying, so the first pics still ahve lattice work seperating the dogs from the pavement. I have to go out in a minute, but I know I am going to come home and find that Mac & Tess have carved their names into the concrete slab - :)

Good on You for doing it all yourself!!!! :)

I am feeling it, the doing it all myself bit. I am so sore.

I have covered the slab tonight. It will rain, and it will get wet, but the concrete guy who delivered it, and the receptionist I talked to at the company told me that it only takes 4 hours to set. I checked, and it is set, but I covered it anyway. The dogs are prevented from accessing it now. They can walk alongside, look at it, but cannot get to it.

okay, so the next step is setting up the shed/aviary breeding room. If you remember, I bought an old aviary, rectangular, 3m x 2m x 1.8m I think the dimensions are. Now I can go through and set this up.

May start tomorrow, if not Sunday.

Body is so sore, and I have some papers to mark for school, so we will see.

Are you tiling the floor Dave :thankyou:

Great Job Dave, I have never been much of a handy man... slowly but surely I am trying to build up more and more experience and hopefully in a years time I'll be ready for the big job of building my own aviary/birdroom in one... Really looking forward to the challenge. I am sure you will do a great job! The concrete looks great :thankyou:

hey dave

this is looking great :D . my setup is/will be very similar to yours  . i have the seperate aviary/flight for the resting birds and i will be putting up either a shed or aviary approx 3mx3m or 3mx2m only for breeding cages and other breeding equipment. Very interested too see the finished product, this is inspiring me to hurry up and do mine.

And Kaz did you tile your birdroom yourself? that looks fantastic. i wanted too lay just some vinyl down when i do mine. just a cheaper option and it suits my budget. nice work Kaz!!!!!! :)

Yeah....my first ever attempt at tiling :)

PS tiles arent too expensive...those ones were $9 metre.

well your tiling job looks like a proffesional job. those tiles are reasonably priced, but you still have to buy the grout and everything to lay them on...

wow that is looking good now

Decent lino these days isnt cheap anyway....enough tiles for a small birdroom would be just oddments at a tile store or clearance outlet. Easier to keep clean.
