Posted December 30, 200816 yr Im volunteering at Australia Zoo again next month and because everyone knows what happened to her partner Blue when I went away last holidays he got sick and died. Well I have arranged to take Molly to the sunshine coast with me. The family Im staying with have a female budgie as well called Tweety. Tweety has been by herself every since they got her so about 4 years. I was just wondering cauld I put Molly's cage next to Tweetys cage in the living room. as both birds have been by themselves for a few months or more they wouldn't effect each others health would it???? and also transporting Molly cause it is an hour and a half away. I have a smaller cage as well as her big cage which I will take with me. Should I put her in the small cage and with or without water and food. Also anything else that might be good to help her with the trip.
December 30, 200816 yr Read our health section on quarantine. Stress of moving brings out illnesses. Quarantine is minimum 5 metres apart and preferably in another room. Budgies can carry illnesses and disease ina dormant state until mixed with another budgie or stress and then they get sick. So, NO...not a good idea to put cage next to cage
December 30, 200816 yr But what about the travelling Should be okay travelling with you. The smaller the cage the better when travelling...less chance of injury
December 30, 200816 yr Are you travelling alone or will there be someone with you? Is the car air conditioned? It is probably good to have someone who can hold the cage/container steady in the car if possible. Others on here have a lot more knowledge about transporting budgies than I do though. I'm sure it can be done.
December 30, 200816 yr Author Yes there will be my grandparents in the car. I will be with the cage in the back. The car is fully airconditioned the back seat as well. Should I cover the cage, any other tips about transporting budgies would be great thanks.
December 30, 200816 yr I imagine it would be good to take things like swings down, things that could move around a lot.

So, NO...not a good idea to put cage next to cage  I was reading that and found this section: 9. POSITION · Inside conditions; separate air space. Does this mean that they should be in different rooms. Also the room that has there budgie in opens up into kitchen and other living spaces does that mean that it would not be suitable for Molly to be in any of those rooms either?
December 30, 200816 yr Basically 5 metres is considered seperate air space unless there is lots of movement in the room (such as a fan blowing.
December 30, 200816 yr Author okay thanks for that. Is there a FAQ thing for limiting stress when transporting birds?
December 30, 200816 yr Author okay so I did some research here and on other sites and found this sentence:"Budgies are not as sensitive as many other bird species and normally bear a journey by car without getting into trouble"Just wondering if this is a true statement. I also found some useful tips for transporting budgies.* Supply millet * Small Cage* Remove all toys/ swings as it can cause injury*Secure cage with seat belt* I did some research on transporting small birds and found this sentence was wondering if it was true or not:Budgies are not as sensitive as many other bird species and normally bear a journey by car without getting into trouble.Things to do: (Please if there are better ways or anyone knows some things that could be wrong feel free to let me know)* Provide millet*Food/ water provided* Remove all toys and swings* Lower perches* Calming music?????*Cover cage* Air conditioned carwith the water issue these are some sujestions I have found for providing water:* freeze water before transporting so that its slowly melts during travel????* provide water in cotton wool????Please correct me if needed, I need your oppinions also on the providing water part
December 30, 200816 yr do nto provide any water as it willspill. Instead, wet a spinach lead and put it in there. Your bird can get water from the water ont he leaf and fromt he leaf itself.
December 30, 200816 yr okay... small cage, lower perches, remove all toys, supply millet if you like... Remove water- she won't need it for that period of time, maybe supply some leafy green for moisture... Cover three sides of the cage- maybe have the side that faces you open so she can see you. All birds are different... some prefer to be fully covered, some not. See how she goes and play it by ear. Mine enjoy music, just the radio is fine. Edited December 30, 200816 yr by maesie added more
December 30, 200816 yr Author well Molly and my Grandad have something in common...... they both love singing to country music. LOL
December 30, 200816 yr Before I went away I moved my two birds to a friends house which was about an hour away. One was a gift so was in a little carry box with a bow on top and the other was just in his flight cage. When we got to my friends house Buddy who was in the flight cage had destroyed his cage, was in a panic and it took him ages to calm down, the new bird that was a gift was fine and was out and about exploring the new area within mintues when buddy did not come out till later that night and even then was not a happy bird. So a small box like a show box with holes in it is always a good idea, i find that they really like that, cause it's dark and small and they feel safe.
January 1, 200916 yr Author okay so I have decided that its best for Molly to leave her with my Grandparents insted of taking her with me. My reasons for this is because A: they have a cat who is an indoor cat, even though is doesn't go for there bird it may thing of Molly as a new toys etc. B: because they have lots of little children that might decide to let Molly out and she may get lose outside. C: because is either Molly or Tweety have some illness that is laying dorment in thier systems then either of them could get sick and D: because my unce hates loud noises tweety just chatters to her toys were as Molly scretches to her toys and with the two birds they may be constantly calling out to one another and theres the other reason of if Molly stresses out. Now the only problem I have with leaving Molly at home would be that both Grandparents will be working all day from 8:30 in morning till 4:00 in afternoon. I did consider leaving her cage outside but we have regular visits from the butcher birds and from the stories I have heard Its not a good idea. Our house is installated so its cooller inside then out but it can still get a bit warm inside. We have an allarm system so keeping the fans on would just trigger it. Would Molly be okay??
January 1, 200916 yr Should be fine, but it really depends how hot the house is I guess. If it's two storey, downstairs is usually a lot cooler than upstairs, and bigger rooms will probably have better ventilation than small closed rooms. She will need drinking water, but you could also leave a small shallow dish of water for her to bathe in if she needs to. Budgies can regulate their own heat to an extent, by bathing or sticking out their wings and panting, but it's probably not good to have them in a really hot stuffy place for too long. But they are naturally desert birds, so I think as long as they have water they can usually tolerate hot better than cold.
January 1, 200916 yr Author thanks for that, she has a clip on birdie bath room but she only ever drinks out of it she never baths in it. Its funny cause she drinks out of what she is supposed to bath in and baths in what shes supposed to drink out of. So during the time Im away I will replace the clip on bird bath and put a shallow dish in for her instead.
January 1, 200916 yr Forget the bath.....too much can go wrong with a larger container of water when you arent there....even if it gets pooped in and she drinks the water....not good. Also leave the radio on for her for company. PS Very sound thinking in the way you made your decisions about the holiday too  Edited January 1, 200916 yr by KAZ
January 1, 200916 yr Author okay so I should just give her, her normal water container with water no bath
