'd put some awnings over the windows to protect against the rain. You can see some in my old photos... I'll try to dig some up.

Am half way though making some :D hopefully they will be done today - will post pics :D

Fantastic Liv and 007! You won't know what to do with all the space - to start with :D Then more breeding boxes and holding cages get added...... (speaking from personal experience). You set up is definitely going to be a budgie Hilton.

Really looking forward to seeing the progression with flights etc.

Hi Liv,

Your new bird room looks fantastic, just a quick question - What are your plans for combating the heat in the summer months?

I have 3x3 tin shed that I plan to use one day and I was thinking about building a second roof out of shade cloth about 20cm above the current roof.

Love to hear your ideas on the problem..

Cheers,

Glen

Our summer plans are to erect 3 shade sails over the entire area, covering the flights and the shed. I am also installing 40mm polystyrene sheets to the walls and ceiling. And finally, as we live on a hill, we are taking full advantage of the breeze, by making sure the windows are facing the right direction for maximum cross ventilation. Oh, and we will probably invest in a portable evaporate A/C for those unexpected heat waves, however i am hoping not to be breeding in the middle of the really hot summer.

Yes Liv I am looking forward to waking up one day and seeing a thread on here called "A tour of Nubbly5's Bird Room" It looks fantastic with the new water system and the nest boxes... I'm allowed to dream :D

That said Liv, yours and 007's is nothing to be ashamed about, you've done a great job so far and I know it will keep getting better and better. Your birds must be very happy :D And they are some very nice birds at that...

haha, thanks Jimmy. Its the blue board and bricks that makes it look so slap dash at the moment. the birds dont care that they are not in custom made cage stands, but i care so its not too far down in the list of things to do

The birds are happy. Some pairs that were totally disinterested in breeding before, are now showing interest :D

trust me if I had half that set up I'd be SOOOO happy. My building plans are on hold until I move into my new place... I spend all night dreaming about budgies and aviaries and all day sketching plans... and my sketching is terrible..

Have you also started an aviary fund JB ?

The bird room has taken a beating with the last 3 days of foul weather. Gail forced winds, heavy rain and bitter cold. The windows and the door has been pretty much sealed tight the entire time. To my delight it has stayed warm and dry inside - i was really worried it was going to leak like a sieve - PHEW :(

My clever Hubby (AKA 007) has been busy the last couple of days building an internal flight in the birdroom.

The flight is 3m long by about 80cm wide and 180cm high (at the low side) and it is designed to build the strength of the chicks and resting parents before going into the external flight :)

Thanks Kaz :)

When i first put the babies in there they didn't know how to fly up at first. it was like they had to learn how to fly all over again.

We still need to build the stands for the cabinets as we took out the makeshift benches they were on before. Hoping to get them done soon so we can reposition the cabinets along the flight wall :D

I would add, that while I *did* all this Liv was there every second helping out cut wire and hang on to the metal while I pop-riveted it in place. She did cut all the wire and it was a chore squeezing in next to breeding chicks - not making a noise - to attach the wire. Truly a team effort two days in the making. I'm just glad it's all done, because it was a bit of a chore at time, long days... - although lots of fun too, to see the results.

On the first morning we decided to start, I just ambled down to the hardware store with a rough idea of all the materials, but it has turned out not half bad, and the birds don't seem to mind it at all. It also freed up three cages, which has allowed us to put some rather *interesting* birds down which were gifted to us (who can afford $1000 birds after all?).

I am especially glad that the photo of me stuck in the aviary (after she locked me in) was not included!! Can not be seen without two blondes at the same time and a martini (and Olive)!!

Liv...........slip him an extra martini or two and post that other pik :)

tsk tsk! karen - may all your budgies be grand champions!

The bird room is almost done... We have been fiddling with the layout and trying to find which we like the best. At one stage we had the 12 cabinets all stacked up across the flight... we couldn't see the birds in the flight, and i also didn't like all the mess being able to fall into the flight. if there was an outbreak of something it would spread REALLY fast! so this layout was no good...

So the other day i set to it, and moved them all around, plus added another 6 cages after i built another 6 boxes :thankyou:

this is how it looks now and i am finally happy with the layout

I am not planning on the pair in the black cage staying there. They paired in the aviary and really needed a room. I have one last chick to fledge and then they can go into that cabinet and I can have my little table back - Yay!

The sun beams in an hits both banks of cabinets at different times of the day, where before no direct sunlight hit them. I also use a mirror to direct the sunlight into the flight.
