Posted December 29, 200816 yr Ive seen so many wonderful photos of big budgie flocks in avairies and small flocks kept in doors. I have a question though, how do you keep multiple birds healthy? Also are there any tips to keeping multiple birds healthy?
January 1, 200916 yr Author I was also wondering today, if one bird has an illness that is laying dormant in there system (and that illness is triggered either by stress or another bird) how can you be sure even after quaranteen that your bird(s) wont get sick?

Also are there any tips to keeping multiple birds healthy?Multiple aviary birds are treated on a cyclic basis for various things. When you walk through your aviary you dont look a bird square in the eye, you look up its butt from under the perch...any sick looking fluffed up ones get pulled out of the aviary and put into a sick cage for assessment and treatment.I was also wondering today, if one bird has an illness that is laying dormant in there system (and that illness is triggered either by stress or another bird) how can you be sure even after quaranteen that your bird(s) wont get sick?Quarantine is a time to observe and treat for things. Some people keep the treatments simple and other more expereinced breeders treat for all possible hidden illnesses.
January 1, 200916 yr Always look at the vent, tail bobing, feathers above the cere. Look out for any fluffy ones. Basically, just get to know your birds and at the first sign of any acting different, pull them out and see whats wrong and go from there. Most breeders have a hospital cage which is used for sick birds and is kept away from the main flock until healthy.

Could you give me an example of a cyclic treatment programe for multiple birds? Could you also tell me what other treatments do people use besides worm and mite treatments?
January 1, 200916 yr A basic regime is wormng four times a year and a treatment for mites as needed, for someone with outside aviaries where other birds may come near this might be every couple of months for enclosed flights this mayonly be when birds are moved for other reasons. Other treatments some people may use include antibiotics to treat various things. Personally I don'tlike to use antibotcs unless necessary so I choose to do a basc quarantine during which birds are observed. My main aim is to support a healthy immune system with good foods and an enriched lifestyle, this leads to happy and healthy birds  Edited January 1, 200916 yr by melbournebudgies

January 1, 200916 yr Also in outsoor birds if your ground gets wet its a good idea to treat with coccivet for coccidiosis. Can recommend vet Rob Marshall's book if you want preventative or treatment regimes for budgerigars, particulary in aviaries. Jaz
January 1, 200916 yr A key point to remember that a large flock a bird that are to be kept healthy needs a very observant caretaker where they observe their birds behaviors, look at the droppings, watch for sick birds along with doing the above that was mentioned...having a large flock means more money to be able to take care of them properly. There are many out there with large flocks and sick birds because they won't put the time and money into it. Kaz, Liv and many others are so good at doing what they do. :glare:
