Posted December 27, 200816 yr Well I've been busy searching the web and looking at the breeders over in Europe and England's set ups and I've noticed a lot of them are using plastic cages, I am guessing this is to stop the bugs and mites that are associated with wood... It appears these are the most popular http://www.oesieg.de/intro/default_e.html So the question I'm asking is... Are they available in Australia? If so where can you get them from? Does Anyone here use them? Thanks guys Edited December 27, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
December 27, 200816 yr It's one of those addresses that goes to a default page. If you pan onto the product link in the top row and click breeding boxes you'll see them. They are totally plastic and aluminium and they look great, lovely and easy to clean!!
December 27, 200816 yr Author yeah if you go to the catalog tab on the page, go down to nest boxes or even the breeding cage, they are made of plastic and aluminium.. They have some links to people who use there products... some pretty good achievers there...
December 27, 200816 yr OOOH the same egg torch that I got off Kaz is there! I highly reccomend it! Best tool I have to date!
December 27, 200816 yr They are very good. I would like to upgrade to them but frieght to Australia would kill it. You might have to find a way to do it with our manufacturing industry. I can design them (flights, breeding cages, nest boxes) but would need some one to do a proper job of it.
December 27, 200816 yr Could you just make them out of opaque perspex Daz? Get a glass place to cut and drill the perspex to size for you and use aluminium corner fixings for the edges... that's what I was thinking anyway
December 27, 200816 yr Platic sheet or board is available from any plastic supplier. You could just buy that and make it the same way you'd make a wooden one.
December 27, 200816 yr Yeah that's basically what I was thinking Hills. All these great ideas for when I move!!!!!
December 27, 200816 yr Author I would imagine that it would drastically reduce the risk of mites and the like... I just have no idea where to start with the idea... I guess like you say hills contact a plastics supplier and see what I can get from them... if anyone else has any luck please keep me posted... Surely there would be someone out there that has done it already... I can't have come up with such a wonderful money making idea...
December 28, 200816 yr Hey JB, when I move (hopefully) during the year I think this would be something I'd like to pursue when I make my cabinets, when it comes time I'll let you know and maybe we could have a building day and build some for both of us
December 28, 200816 yr Author It would be worth looking into as far as price is concerned... I send them an email asking if they had any suppliers in Australia, I doubt they do so I think it will be a case of making it from scratch like you say... hmmm so much to think about...
December 28, 200816 yr I honestly don't think they would be hard to make. More expensive than wood but more durable so they would last longer. They'd also be lighter and easier to clean. I think I would make them singly and then bolt them together, they would stack beautifully and all you would do would be put a safety strap or two on the top row to stop them toppling (like you do with a bookshelf)
January 4, 200916 yr Author found this site as well over in england... http://thecragstud.webs.com/birdproductsforsale.htm just some ideas...
January 4, 200916 yr couldnt you just sillicon the boxes like a fish tank and add a wire frount air holes along the top alway to vent air flow a hole cut with a whole saw on side end of box so you can add or remove it of corse it wold have a latch door plug that twists on and off they work best to fit back in when box gone not forgetting the siide out floor to clean would have a wire floor and frount so floor can be plastic slide i know what i mean i could make that but is their any real advantage apart from the mite ?
January 4, 200916 yr This is a really cool idea. I also need new boxes.... i am liking the idea of the plastic, and they don't sound all that hard to make. There is a supplier here some where who sells plastic nest boxes. forum member Sunnie has them and i believe she got them from a shop near here. They are kind of like these seen here (but the ones Sunnie has are better i think) ---> http://www.petmania.net.au/BreedingFlightCages.htm They look to be updating their website so the link to the nest boxes doesn't work yet , but there is a picture Edited January 4, 200916 yr by **Liv**
January 4, 200916 yr Author hmm wonder if there is anyone over here in melbourne... the freights gotta be cheaper from Adelaide rather than Europe or england
January 4, 200916 yr hmm wonder if there is anyone over here in melbourne... the freights gotta be cheaper from Adelaide rather than Europe or england they cool but is it big enough ? looked kind of small the box i mean
January 4, 200916 yr Here is Sunnie's plastic nest boxes ---> http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....c=21215&hl=
January 4, 200916 yr now they are really cool i love the clear slide doors less interferance i want some them i love them when i move though and have a better set up thanks liv i will have to get on to thoughs
January 4, 200916 yr Anyone hazard a guess at how thick the plastic would need to be? I have been looking at various perspex suppliers and can get some cheap in white depending on thickness. I have built fishtanks and as GB suggested I had thought they would be easiest assembled in that way
January 4, 200916 yr i wold say it wouldnt need to be more than 3 ml thick plastics prity tough just so long its not flexable mb perspects would be the shot i think Edited January 4, 200916 yr by GenericBlue
January 4, 200916 yr okay, well I can get 3mm perspex for $10 a sheet for a large sheet, apparently it can be cut with a jigsaw...
January 4, 200916 yr yes it can then just sand the edges use the same metal strip the fish tanks use and bam make a tray also with aliminuim for floor place on wire frount wire floor ( optinal ) jizzaw the hole for box to mb
