Posted December 27, 200816 yr What does everyone use inside there breeding boxes? I use wood shavings. allows me to know if the hen has been in the box. 99% of the birds all throw out majority of the shavings. I was at a breeders place today and he used something else which look like seed. cant remember what he called it. think it was somehting husks.
December 27, 200816 yr You can buy rice husks from pet shops, maybe that was what he was using? I use rolled oats until chicks are a week old, then I add a scoop of seed to the box. At about three weeks average age I ditch everything out of the box and replace with 100% clean seed and add as necessary, I also add a millet spray at this point

December 27, 200816 yr Yeah, a bit like the husk off a giant canary seed. I thought of those but having bagged probably a tonne or more of them in my time working in pet shops I felt they were quite prickly and personally didn't think they'd be very nice on the soft skin of a new baby budgie
December 28, 200816 yr I use sanitised wood shavings from the pet shop  I've used wood shavings, rice hulls etc but my favourite is always eucalyptus bark which the hens usually haul out of the box and/or chew into crumbs.
December 28, 200816 yr I use a mixture of kitty litter & pine shaveings,in a icecream container in the nest box, makes it very easy to clean nest boxs, just put in a fresh icecream container.
