Posted December 22, 200816 yr well i was wondering if a quail could live at the bottom of the avairy with budgies? how small are the babies, will they fit through the budgie size wirering? will budgies attack them? is it worth having quail with them or not? Edited December 23, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 22, 200816 yr I have quails in my aviaries and they get along fine. King quail will stay on the ground, I have five of those. I also have a bob white quail who is morelike a chook, he'll fly up and perch on the branches with thebudgies overnight, his best friend is the cockatiel, they snuggle up together every night for bed If you are lucky enough for your quail to have babies you will ave to block the wire along the bottom for about 25cm so they can't get through Edited December 22, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 22, 200816 yr Author okay cool so what would you block it with ? Edited December 22, 200816 yr by LILBABYBUDGIES
December 22, 200816 yr Anything really, fine wire(mouse wire), perspex, metal, timber anything that doesn't leave a gap for them to get through
December 22, 200816 yr I used to have quails in the bottom of my avairy. Melbournebudgies is right, you need smaller wire because the babies get right through standard bird wire, or you could get tin and line the bottom sides with it. Also, if a quail gets scared it will fly directly up like a helicopter, so make sure their are no sharp things sticking out of the roof.
December 22, 200816 yr i have 2 quails in my aviary. they need a roofless nest site and safe zone where they can hide but wont crack open their head if they get a fright and fly straight up. they are little cuties They crow too. It is always best to stick to one pair per aviary
December 23, 200816 yr lol like a helicopter i didnt think they could fly? King quails can definitly fly. I have had some for years. I got them because I was told they keep the avairy floor clean. In my experience with quails this is not true, they dig up the seed like chooks and throw it around everywhere.
December 23, 200816 yr Yeah they really don't help keep it clean but I think they are cute and my kids love eating the eggs
December 23, 200816 yr I got the Chinese ones as I was told they would keep the floor clean, they did not. they would nest right near the avairy door which was a pain, they made this noise like a sick cat which annoyed my neighbours (and they asked me to get rid of them) and to top it off, twice I was in the avairy they got a fright and flew straight into my face, one headache and one black eye later they had to go bye bye. They are cute but not for me.

December 23, 200816 yr :baby: Can't say I've ever been attacked by my quails :mallet: There aren't babies inside the eggs unless they actually sit on them, just like it takes a few days of a budgie hen sitting on her eggs before you can see anything start to grow.
December 23, 200816 yr There's quails in Kens aviary...I keep trying to give them away but noone is interested :baby:
December 23, 200816 yr I like quails on the bottom of the cage. Something different. :baby: Like others have said though, one male per cage is best...
December 23, 200816 yr Ive been thinking about getting a pair, But I have a greate on the bottom of my cage.
December 23, 200816 yr I don't think your cage would be big enough regardless of the grate Jess. They need plenty of space to scratch and wander around
December 23, 200816 yr I don't think your cage would be big enough regardless of the grate Jess. They need plenty of space to scratch and wander around I agree. They are more an aviary type bird than a cage bird. Aviary as in walking around type aviary not just large cage.
