Posted December 22, 200816 yr Came home from work this evening and one side of a budgie's face has swollen up to grotesque tumour proportions within 24hrs since last I checked them. I have only seen dental abscesses this big by proportion, but budgies don't have teeth! It is a budgie emergency, and I don't know what to do. The swelling is located infront of the earhole and below the eye, and there does not seem to be any feather cysts in the area. I think it is something related to the ear or the eye. Any trainee vets online who can help me?
December 22, 200816 yr Oh no  I hope you can find out what is wrong. A photo would help greatly if you can post one.

December 22, 200816 yr That is huge. I would take her to a vet asap. Are their any 24/7 vets open where you live? Edited December 22, 200816 yr by pearce
December 22, 200816 yr she hasn't got time to get to vet, it is increasing in size rapidly, i need to do something now, it is hot and swollen and her airway is in danger. Guys, she can hardly breathe Edited December 22, 200816 yr by DrNat
December 22, 200816 yr It is a little hard to tell because the quality of the pics. It seems to appear though as if it is full of air. The wet feathering is that due to any fluids leaking from the site?
December 22, 200816 yr Can you see any sort of pus point on it (like the equivelent of the tip of a pimple), if you can and you really think you have no other option then you may need to sterilise a needle and lance it and see if anything comes out. I wouldn't suggest it though unless you feel that it is your only option, a vet would be my first choice. Good point RIP you need to know if it's air or fluid, if you think it might be air don't think about trying to lance it Edited December 22, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 22, 200816 yr MB suggestion is exactly what I was about to suggest. It is sounding a little like the Crop has ruptured.
December 22, 200816 yr Could she have been bitten by something?? I'm sorry DrNat I really have no clue other than getting a vet and I'm not sure you're going to find one at this time of night
December 22, 200816 yr Another option. It could be Crop Impaction if it cutting off the windpipe. It is considered serious
December 22, 200816 yr sent pics to pearce and ripbudgies.it has swollen underneath and behind her earhole nowi pushed a pin in and only dark blood came outit is solid hot apparently painful increasing swellingshe feels like she has food in her crop. could it be a sinus or ear infectio should i put her out of her misery Edited December 22, 200816 yr by DrNat
December 22, 200816 yr If it is an impacted crop it can treated. It will hard to do though if you don't own a crop needle. The way I use to do it was to crop needle a few mls of warm water directly into the crop. Massage gently, turn the bird upside down and try to massage the mass little bit at a time out of the crop. It needs to feel soft and pliable.
December 22, 200816 yr Scary times  Surely any of the vets has a recording on their phone amswering service which says they have an energency number ? Here is Perth we have 24 hr emergency vets. Edited December 22, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 22, 200816 yr I'm really sorry to hear that, but its probably for the best. Has anyone got any idea what it was? How horrific!!
December 22, 200816 yr Are you goin to take her to the vet for an autopsy? (or if you have the stomach for it check for yourself what's inside the mass). Maybe it's justme but given the way it blew up all of a sudden I would want to know what caused it.
