Bird Room

I was at a breeders place the other day, and he had all of his birds that werent breeding in these cages.

he said he liked them in these as he can ensure that they are kept as healthy as possible and not able to eat anything off the floor as they could in a flight.

What is everyone's thoughts.

the cages are 147cmx46cmx109cm. they are just an extra big flight cage!

Every one to there own but my concern is that they wouldn't get the excerise they need for there wing muscle ect.

I believe they should have plenty of room to fly and exercise and any way in the wild they eat off the ground so if you keep your aiaries clean everything should be fine.

The healthiest breeding birds are those that have space, good food and exercise. Holding up in flight cages DIES ( as Splat has said ) affect muscle tone.

The idea to a flight aviary is to have at least 4 metres length and a feeding platform at one end of the flight just above ground level ( one foot up from ground ) and the perches at the far end. The birds need the 4 metres minimum from low feeding platform to high perches to be able to build up and develop should and wing muscles. Its good for them.

A lot of people along the way will tell you stuff to justify how they do things, but more often then not they dont necessarily do whats best for the birds as much as they do whjats best for their budget or their space or circumstances.

PS we sold some princess parrots yesterday but we REFUSED to sell any to people who didnt have at least a 4m by 4m aviary for them. It is surprising how many people want to jam every type of bird they like into a 2m by 1m aviary and still think they can put 4 breeding pairs in with nestboxes.
