Posted December 20, 200816 yr Just wondering what the minimum distance I need to leave from the front of the breeding cabinets to the aviary divider is for the breeding birds to be comfortable. I am planning to access the breeding birds via doors in the aviary so I can really make the distance as small or large as I like as I won't have to actually be able to get into the space myself. Obviously the smaller the partitioned area for the cabinets the larger the space left over for the flight area.
December 20, 200816 yr If too close the birds in cabinets just get stressed wanting to be with the aviary birds they can see. Wouldnt matter much if it was the backs of the breeder cabinets to the aviary so they can hear but not see. But if all the birds in the aviary are flying free and very close and viisible it will drive cabinet birds crazy
December 20, 200816 yr I agree with Kaz, I know when I put a cage in the aviary all the birds are curious and fly up to it and hang off the wire , so if they were breeding birds, I really don't think thay would be doing much breeding as they would be constantly interupted.
December 20, 200816 yr You can have a look at my set up. Just click on my signature and go to the link to the avery. There is a plan of where the breeding cabinets are to the flights.
December 20, 200816 yr Author I was hoping you would reply Daz, do you find it distracts the birds having it set up like that as Kaz suggested? It was your set up I had in mind when i thought I would divide it.

December 20, 200816 yr My Shed is 3m x 4.6m with the flights and breeding room. Breeding room is 3m x 2.3m and I've bred 113 chicks in 7 months.

What do you mean that you won't be able to get into the space, What space do you mean, like the breeding space because I was wandering how you would feed them and clean their cages.
December 21, 200816 yr Author I meant it didn't matter whether I was able to get into the space or not as I would have doors which opened fully to allow me access, I'm now kinda rethinking my plans and might put the breeding cages somewhere else. Actually how many birds could I fit per 1/3 of the aviary? So the space would be 2.4m deep X 1m wide X 1.8-2m high(pitched roof) The other option is I might just use one end of the aviary as the kindy flight Edited December 21, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies

I would put any more than that in there.
December 21, 200816 yr Author No worries, at this stage I wouldn't expect to need to put any more than that in there anyway as I'm fairly low volume, by next season I should be in my new house (hopefully...)Another breeding room question does anyone have quails in their breeding area and do you thnk it would bother the birds?
December 21, 200816 yr We have quails near our breeding area and have no trouble from them. The only trouble I ever had was when we had some tiels housed in nearby flights once. The tiels habit of night frights and screetching out in the night would send sleeping budgie flying off and crashing into walls. I lost a few budgies at that time due to tiels. The tiels were soon gone. Edited December 21, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 21, 200816 yr Greg reckons having quail in the ayiariies helps get rid of those nasty moths, I had them but I found them a pain so gave them away.
December 21, 200816 yr Author I have quails in my flight and I love the little guys, I was just deciding what I would do with them if I divided the aviary since then the kindy cage flight wouldn't be big enough for all of them.
