Posted December 17, 200816 yr Went to a local bird dealer today to look at nest boxes for my large parrots and came home with a couple of gorgeous crested budgies. They are what you would call a large pet type or small show type ( especially when it comes to cresteds which are smaller to start with anyway) so I haven't yet decided whether I will breed them together or put them to large show birds from my current showy stock We all know how hard it is to get a good photo of a violet bird but they are both the ost beautiful deep violet colour Edited December 17, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 17, 200816 yr OMG I AM JEALOUS! If you come across anything like this again let me know. They are exactly what I am looking for. Great Score! Edited December 17, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 17, 200816 yr Author I thought of you when I saw them Jess but they were the only two violets there and they were mine, mine, mine They had some other beautiful cresteds though which only came in yesterday, YF2 dom pieds and the like, the violet normal was the nicest of the lot though :hi:
December 17, 200816 yr I thought you could not breed a crest to a crest as they produce not great off spring. Other then that very pretty birds
December 17, 200816 yr Author No reason not to from a health perspective, it just does nothing to help with the size of the bird, that is why I'm thinking of putting them to my biggest show birds :hi: I'm thinking one of those big grey boys I have for the hen, unfortunately I don't really have another show hen to put with the cock so this season I might just put him with a nice pet type just to get some pretty babies and then next season I'll put him to a crestbred or a big normal. I have a really pretty violet dom pied in my aviary (similiar to this hen but not crested) who I have been trying to decide who to breed with so this guy might be the one
December 17, 200816 yr Oh okay, for some reason I thought you could not put a crested to a crested or maybe that that lut's... I don't think i am ever going to get my head around budgie genetics... maybe I should have stuck to Horses!
December 17, 200816 yr Author Basically crested and ino have the same theory, the feeling is that putting them together creates a smaller bird so it is more beneficial to put a visual to a split or a split to a split to help keep the size of the chicks up
December 17, 200816 yr I'd heard that AV too... BUT... I didn't see your other cresteds when I dropped off my birds, I'll have to see these ones when I pick them up :hi: They look great!
December 17, 200816 yr Author Yes you did Jimmy, you held the babies of one of them :hi: The others were in the very top cage on that same stand and were probably a little hard to see given I had that stand out for cleaning so it wasn't as bright.

I dont know if crested budgies are the same but when two crested canaries in Kens aviary bred together we got babies with double crests :hi:
December 17, 200816 yr Author That's cool!!! I know a lot of the show birds seem to have what is sometimes called a Japanese crest which is where there is a kind of ruff on their chest as well, personally I'm not so fond of that look.
December 17, 200816 yr Ahh really was that them MB??? I was to in awe to even notice the parents... And the fact that I had cute little babies in my hands... Aww... I hope my girls come to the party... I wanna be a granddad...
December 17, 200816 yr Author I don't think any of those babies will be crested (unless any of the very little ones are, certainly the larger ones aren't as I can see their feathers coming in) but their dad is 'Mo' who is a pet type tufted. My show crested pair haven't yet bred this round even though the silly hen has been sitting in the nest box for a couple of weeks now, I think I might have to close it off for a couple of days to give her a bit of a hurry up
December 17, 200816 yr Here is information on breeding them, I put my source Crest × Crest matings will produce the highest proportion of Crested progeny plus some Crest-breds. However, I feel that there are no advantages to be gained in such pairings as almost invariably they will produce Crests of poor quality and little substance. Crest × Crest-bred matings will produce the next highest proportion Crested progeny plus Crest-breds and pure normals (with no Crest background). This is in fact, the type of pairing that is most recommended for the maintenance of size and type. It is important that when using this pairing, the Crest-bred should come from a pairing in which as least one parent was visually Crested. Crest × normal matings will produce a few Crests but mostly Crest-breds and normals. However, this is the sort of pairing one has to make now and then to improve the size and quality of the Crests and Crest-breds. The normal parent used, however, needs to be of outstanding size and type. Crest-bred × Crest-bred and Crest-bred × normal matings have been known to produce the occasional Crested bird. (This proves that the Crest gene is more than merely dominant in character). However, this is not a recommended mating for Crest production, unless one is breeding for the pet market, as a lot of "wastage" is produced. http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/specialist/crests/crests.html On Topic: they are beautiful birds, good luck with them.
December 17, 200816 yr Author They were hatched January of this year so by the time they are finished quarantine...
December 17, 200816 yr Nice.... I can't believe how pretty all these birds are that have been posted lately. Good score MB.
