Hand Rearing Formula

Featured Replies

I am having problems with the hand rearing formulas that I have tried, they keep getting little bits caught in the end of the crop needle blocking it unless I sift the formula and then it means that I throw half of it away.

Vetafarms Neocare is the best out of the 2 I have tried but I am having to sift that too. The other I tried was Avian Science Hand rearing formula for baby birds, this was really bad as it has bread crumbs in and they are to big to go through the crop needle so I have to sift that and waste about 2/3rd's of the packet.

Paswells is really good. No needle blocks for me.

Avione is a good brand too.

So is tropican.

All 3 are faves of us breeders at the store.

I haven't been able to buy Passwell's brand anywhere, I have a couple of other stores to try.

I haven't heard of the other 2 brands but will look out for them, thanks.

I use passwell also and the needle neither blocks, what size crop needle are you using?

I use a 14 guage 3 inch straight for 2 weeks and older budgies and a 16 guage for younger ones.

I don't know if they have it in Australia, but I use a brand called Kaytee EXACT. I tried a brand called Lafeber's Nutri-Start for my very first clutch of keets, but lost two of the three anyway? I can't blame the formula, but I can say that it didn't mix very well (lots of clumps). I spoke to two other breeders in my area and EXACT is the one they suggested and stand by. The one breeder sucessfully raised 10 cockatiel chicks on it from 14 days old to fledge and the other raised a few clutches of keets and some lovebirds on it too. I just bought a jug for my 6 cockatiels that are due to hatch starting tomorrow. My keets I let the parents raise and only feed if there are issues.

Kaz that is the one i use too ...

I have tried the Avione one and found it was okay for those that NEEDED a feed but wasn't all that crash hot with it , I then trued another one with probotics in it but that thickened up to quick and was rather gritty for the crop needle okay for spoon ...

But i found that the one Kaz posted a picture of is the best by far

You can get KAYTEE stuff over here, but only a few people stock it. Most probably have to special order it in for them
