I take it that you use it to help kill of megabacteria?? I haven't used that one...

Megabac - s is onbly avalible from a vet under derection. It can;t be bought over the counter. You would only use it to treat MEGA or AGY Desease.

Vetafarm is only for ove seas buyers. It can not be bought here in Australia unless by a Vet. Most vets perscribe Fungalin.

 

I don't use any mediation during Quarrentine. Why give medication for something that isn't proven. If you suspect something, take the bird to the vet and get a proper diagnosis.

My vet said that giving the birds some lemon or lime juice in their water (or a drop in their beak) helps keep mega at bay and helps the bird fight off the infection if they have a mild case.

 

I give my new guys that when they come in and only give other meds if it's a proven case.

I have started doing this as well as I have a Lemon tree however they don't seem so keen on the Orange.

It's the citric "Acid" that keeps it at bay :rofl: :rofl:

Interesting side note - I asked my bird vet about common remedies including citric acid. The evidence is anecdotal (no reliable scientific studies on it), it may help and it doesn't hurt as long as you don't overdo it. It is not a cure, but said to help reduce numbers (during treatment or to reduce it to prevent disease). He said the same principles for lemon/orange juice apply to red cordial, a popular remedy here. Similiar deal for probiotics, which produce lactic acid (and have other benefits). It makes sense to me, because yeasts such as megabacteria prefer basic environments (high pH), so acidic substances might help by lowering the pH.

 

Of course, it is NOT a cure, it only helps, and if you you don't know what you are 'treating' (eg no one has done a faecal smear or crop flush), you must see an avian vet. Incorrect treatment can be fatal or worsen another problem.

I would like to think that adding citrus fruit to the diet can simply become part of a good well rounded diet which will serve to increase overall health of the bird anyway and strengthen the immune system, much better than dosing them up on drugs just for the sake of it.

 

I gave mine orange today after reading this, they didn't really show any interest in it but I'll keep adding it once a week until they do, mine get freshly picked tea tree a coupleof times a week which is also said to assist with crop health

I agree but after having an outbreak it's something that I will keep up. I don't like giving my birds drugs is I don't have to so anything that is natural that I can give them that may help I will.

I agree. I have never medicated any of my birds "just in case". I have had them checked out as a preventative measure, but never medicated unless diagnosed with an issue. I think you're better with the old fashion quarrentine and if a problem comes about treat it per vet instructions.

Agree Chyso same as the ACV isn't a cure too ...

 

I feed by birds garlic now too it is on the "unsafe" list but my vet said it was fine in small dosage
