Posted December 13, 200816 yr My 2 year old budgie in the past week has had a change in droppings. There is a mix of small (normal looking) to very large (size of 5 cent piece) mushy droppings. She has also developed what I would say sounds like the hiccups. She has been pooing in her water, so could this be the cause?? I change the water each morning, and when I come home it is filthy with her droppings. I am concerned as she is a dear little bird and I'm not sure what could be causing these symptoms? Please help.
December 13, 200816 yr The sound you are discribing sounds like a posssible iodine deficiency and can be fixed if it is by an iodine block in the cage. But if you see a discharge from nostrils or staining above the cere it can be a respiratory issue which would require diagnosis and antibiotics from the vet. The water issue is simple, you need a drinker and not a water dispenser that can be pooped in. Location so it cannot be fouled just needs a little rethink. By a change in the dropping...can you describe the difference in colour etc ? Has there beeen any changes to diet, or has there been any stress ? and WELCOME :budgiedance: Edited December 13, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 14, 200816 yr Author Thank you for responding. No discharge from nostrils of any nature. The droppings are a mixture of normal small with white centre, and very large pasty dark droppings with a large white centre. No change to diet, but I placed a cuttle type of block in her cage (she hasnt touched) which has minerals etc, and put bird sandpaper at the bottome of her cage (which I have removed as she refused to come off her perch). Standard diet of Trill, and green vegies. Plus, she has taken to chewing her nylon swing, and any dropping's on it she eats??? Remove or wash? Edited December 14, 200816 yr by hangers
December 14, 200816 yr Sounds like eggs poops??? Are there any other signs of illness or just weird, big poops? Is she puffed up or anything. I'd say she's gonna lay an egg soon... but thats just my guess.
December 14, 200816 yr Author Just the hiccup type of sound, no other symptoms other than the big droppings.
December 14, 200816 yr Just the hiccup type of sound, no other symptoms other than the big droppings. Does her vent or belly look swollen at all? I'm not sure about the hiccups though? I would think respitory if she had discharge from the nose or other signs of illness. How long have the hiccups been happening?

December 14, 200816 yr Author Is there a liquid that I could put in her water as she is picky with what she eats.
December 14, 200816 yr Hens can lay eggs without the presents of a male... why would it matter that there is only one bird? I've had solo hens lay eggs before. Not fertile of course, but they still have laid. Like I said it was just my guess because I've had similar poops from my birds without the hiccups though. Hanger, listen to KAZ though, there is MUCH MORE experience on her end. I was just trying to throw other thoughts out there since there were no other signs of illness. One other thing you said Hanger was that she has been chewing on her nylon string... is there any possibility that she ingested a small piece of it? And the "hiccups" she's having is actually a reflex to a small piece stuck? Again JUST A THOUGHT... I don't know. Just trying to help.
December 14, 200816 yr Is there a liquid that I could put in her water as she is picky with what she eats.Yes...you can put drops of iodine in her water if it turns out to be an iodine deficiency. It has to be aqueous iodine....in other words ...water soluable.Hens can lay eggs without the presents of a male... why would it matter that there is only one bird?
