Anyone's Guess

Here are the 6 oldest chicks from my two clutches that hatched a total of 11 chicks so far.

The parents of the one clutch were a Green Opaline Cock and a Green Dominant Pied Hen

The parents of the other clutch were a Mauve Opaline Hen and a Sky Blue YF2 Greywing Split to Recessive Pied Cock

So any guesses on sexes and mutations on the chicks or are they too young still?

1. cobalt normal

2. green normal

3. opaline presumably green if it's from the green parents and it will be a hen

4. Maybe another cobalt normal

5. Looks like maybe a green dom pied

6. green series not sureof mutation

All hens from the green pair will be opaline so any others will be cocks :D

Amazing MB... I don't know how you do it. I told my husband what your post reply said and said "isn't it amazing how they know these things"... he said "it will be amazing if she's right!!!!"... I am anxious now to find out!!! :D I can't wait to see them all grown up... :budgiedance:

Well I reserve the right to be wrong especially since it's harder to tell in photos but that's my 'informed guesses' at this stage

I know that opaline one is an opaline as it has white down and the others have grey...

RSCN6908_098.jpg

This photo is just so adorable :D

If you are desperate to know the sexing I do what people do to pregnant women with a needle on a piece of cotton. You turn the budgie upside down making sure you keep the legs out of the way hold the needle on the cotton over the vent and if it swings back and forth then it's a boy and if it goes in circles then it's a girl. I have had 100% success rate with this method and yes I know how stupid it sounds but it works ;)

;) my wife did that with our son... (only it was her wedding ring on some string) it worked too.. Thats funny never heard of it being used with budgies though...

That is too cool... I've never hear of it. Now you have me wondering... I just might try it ;)Does anyone want to comment on chick #2 having one blue wing and one yellow wing? MB thinks it's a normal green? Just wondering how and why both blue and yellow on this bird? Could it be a YF2 like it's dad?

 Oh my gosh, I had just assumed it was a trick of the camera!!!! I wonder if it's a half sider :grouphug:

When you said trick of the camera, I checked all the babies again to see if I can get a better look at the colors... and the one that appeared to have one blue wing and one yellow wing doesn't. But what is weird is that the bird appears to have dark grey and yellow all over it's body???? Instead of it appearing to be a cobalt or mauve bird like some of the other chciks this one looks mauve and has yellow pin feathers.... I do have a yellowface 2 greywing cock as one of the parents is it possible that this one chick is a YF2? I'm confused now...

Here's a picture of the bird today.... next to one of the other chicks... you can clearly see one has white and the other has yellow??? How do I have a yellow and grey AND a yellow and white??

Here's the one with yellow...

Here's the one with white...

And here they are side by side...

I love the pics too... here are a few more... help identify if you can now that they are getting more feathers.

First 2 pics are of the Albino and the Lutino (one from each clutch)... Albino left, Lutino right.

Both females from what I understand?

Here are some more pics of the other chicks that have some feathers...

My Green dominant pied cock... would be a male, right??

RSCN7081_180.jpg

I think this is a normal cobalt or normal mauve, maybe hen? (mum is mauve)? But I don't know if you see it but it has "yellow" on his head?????

RSCN7086_183.jpg

I think this might be a normal mauve hen too?

RSCN7084_182.jpg

Still don't know? Blue yellow??? Normal YF2? No clue???

RSCN7087_184.jpg

Edited by chrissy0705

haha They look good. My wife is still grossed out by them :grouphug: looks like you might have a couple of YF's in there

to young for me... but if you'd like to update pics when they are showing more feather I'll give it a go... basically whatever I say go for the complete opposite... and you'll be close...

Bit hard to tell from photos but here goes.

1. Cobalt Normal

2. Green Normal

3. Pied Green Series

4. Normal

5. Pied Green Series

6. Pied Green Series

Now if you want some expectations from the parents.

1st pair: Opaline Light Green cock X Dominant Pied(sf) Light Green

You don't say what the green is so I have assumed Light Green. I have also assumed the Dom Pied to be single factor.

RESULTS-

25% Light Green Dom Pied(sf) / Opaline cocks

25% Light Green / Opaline cocks

25% Opaline Light Green Dom Pied(sf) hens

25% Opaline Light Green hens

2nd pair: YF2(sf) Greywing Sky Blue / Recessive Pied cock X Opaline Mauve hen

I am assuming the YF to be a single factor. I have calculated for the Greywing but suspect the it is most likely a Dilute. I would like to see a photo of this bird.

RESULTS-

12.5% YF2(sf) Cobalt Type II / Greywing, Danish Pied, Opaline cocks

12.5% Cobalt / Greywing, Danish Pied, Opaline cocks

12.5% YF2(sf) Cobalt Type II / Greywing, Opaline cocks

12.5% Cobalt / Greywing, Opaline cocks

12.5% YF2(sf) Cobalt Type II / Greywing, Danish Pied hens

12.5% Cobalt / Greywing, Danish Pied hens

12.5% YF2(sf) Cobalt Type II / Greywing hens

12.5% Cobalt / Greywing hens

Hope this helps you.

I still can't get over how fast they grow. Just in the two days since I took these pictures they have change sooooo much. Bub #4 from the first breeding pair is almost fully feathered on his wings. When he spreds his wings it's a dark sea of color. His head is yellow, his wings are black and white, and his rum and tail feathers are cobalt blue... just beautiful!!! I'd post more pics, but my camera isn't working (my 3 year old son took the battery out and I can't find it yet).

:) Glad I'm not the only one who can't find where stuff is after the children play with them :)

I don't think bub number 3 from the second lot is a pied I thnk it's an opaline :)

Thank you MB... can you tell me what you see that makes you think that? To me it looked like there was a big patch on the back of it's head... but are you thinking the "patch" I see is actually the "opaline" effect? If that is an opaline it would have to be a hen, right?

I didn't see that last night, a bit tired I guess. If it does have a spot there then yes it is pied, howeverit looks likeit could be opaline too if the down is really white as it appears to me.

I agree with MB

I think you and KAZ might be right... I just pulled this chick and looked at her. She does have white feathers compared to the other chicks that appear to have grey down feathers. And her head today doesn't look so much like a "patch" it's her whole head now. So I think she is an opaline. Being her father is opaline then does this mean she is a hen?
