well i had this bird posted here a couple of months back and it was suggested that i post some new pics a bit further down the track . now by behaviour i think he is a boy , but the cere still has that brown and blue colouring so here it is

also have these 2 young ones i got from neat which i think may be hens , what do you think ?

First budgie is a boy and the other two are hens.

All three are out of breeding condition which is why they look different to normal.

Liv, why would the cere be brown and the nostrils blue? That is not normal for a male out of condition?

hence the confusion :) is it possible he has some sort of chemical imbalance ? maybe he is both male and female ???? he is still moulting and has been doing so for what seems like an eternity now . also the yellow is washing into the blue giving him green patches of feathers underneath where he used to be just cobolt . im wondering if there is more to this bird than meets the eye :(

also no flash was used in these pics either , all natural :)

the yellow washing into the blue is okay that is part of the YellowFace Type 2 gene

how old is he again?

The yellowface sky is a cock the other two are hens.

Cocks can get this brown look to there ceres from time to time.

I have a DF Spangle white cock that got it for a while and I have a young Domy Pied Cock with it.

I'll have to find out why. I do know that a brown cere on a cock can be an idication of kidney problems. But these two are doing fine. :)

LOL brenz did you doubt me and my birds :D :hap: :hap:

Glad to the girls are doing well .... and the Cinny on the other thread is looking good to :D

brez not to alarm you but I had a hen who had the same type of cere colouration as the first one and then she became a cock and then at the 2 year mark she/he died and we found out that he had a cluster of tumors on the base of his brain, he also spent almost all his time in molt and the vet thought that both the sex change and the molt was caused by hormone inbalance from the tumors.

I am NOT saying that your bird has tumors or that you should run him to the vet if he is showing no other signs of illness however you might be right on the hormone inbalance theory.

no definitely no doubting neats . i just had to prove to a mate of mine that used to breed alot of budgies that he was wrong about your 2 hens ( he said 1 was def cock ) . i will split the $50 with you ofcourse :D

im sorry to hear that av , this guy would be nearly 5 months old now i think . and he has been moulting almost the whole time since i got him in late september ( i think ) . moulting shouldnt take this long , this week he also dropped both his tail feathers too !

:D Well in that case then you are off the hook :hap: ........

I agree that the 1st one is a cock and the other 2 are hens. Usually when a cock bird gets brown on the cere it is a sign of hormonal imbalance or testicular cancer

so i probably shouldnt be planning to breed from this boy when he is old enough then ?

That is what I have heard and read too Neville, I think before you decide to breed a bird like this with a possible underlying condition you decide 1. to find out what is causing it or 2. don't breed it

That is my opinion.

I placed the cock in the flight for a few weeks and his cere changed back to blue so I paired him up and have two nice chicks from him. The hen has laid the next clutch and has at least two fertile eggs.

I believe that this cock's condition may have been bought on by stress. I bought him at auction so all the traveling may have caused it.

I agree with Neville on his thoughts on the matter.

It sounds like your bird has a similar history to mine! Sky had an unusual multicoloured cere when I bought him, but it has slowly faded to blue with only a small amount of brown left. He had a big crack rigt up his beak and was being bullied by the other birds in his cage, so very stressed. If your bird is like Sky, some TLC should nurse him back to health! Sky is still timid, but seems a lot healthier and happier now! I am also hoping to breed from him when he's well enough. Good luck!

thanks daz for the insight to your bird being able to breed . curious about the 2 chicks you have from him as to whether or not there ceres are normal . my boy seems to be very palyful and mischievious , but seems overactive at times too !
