Too Many Cocks

Featured Replies

Posted

Standing in my aviary today I realised that excluding my pet types the ricketts hen and one hen who I have already tried this season and doesn't seem interested at the moment I have only one show type hen left but about 7 show type cocks :) Well I figure I may as well put her in the cage vacated by the one who's not interested but how should I pick the cock? Should I simply pick the best cock overall or should I go for another opaline since she is one... I actually really like about four of the cocks and if I had enough hens I would set up a few extra cages and put them all down but I just don't have the hens

Hey if you want to joint breed this season JB I don't mind sending a couple over to your girls :) Not sure that I have the exact types you want though, but atleast you'd get a few chicks this season to hold onto for nextyear

I know, I know.... send 2 of your best here!!! :)
JB if you could collect them from Liv in Adelaide I would send you two

Go for it JB....before the girls go into retirement

Ooh So tempting... I dunno if they have the qualities you want though MB... Your trying to build up your stock and get further into the show side of things... you really think Lip and Len are up for it?

Lip and Len aren't that bad and they are hens too so you have to expect them to be less developed than a cock. Off the top of my head these are the cocks I have spare at the moment

There might be one or two others but my brain is goingto mush right now :)

Is that counting my hen that you have?

Don't worry i did a catch all the treat and put then hens in one cage and the cocks over three cages! I to have a hen shortage.

Oh please tell me that is a Ozzie egg.

If I come across any good hens for you that I don't want (what is it that you are breeding now?) I will let you know.

Yes it's an Ozzie egg but we know what Ozzie's like :hap: They both got a super bikini wax(plus Ipull a few away from his eyes) so ya never know. I've never seen them doing much but hey I've never seen some of the others doing much either and they've managed eggs so fingers crossed

At the moment I have seven pet type eggs and four babies and three show type eggs, the four babies and the first few of the eggs are from my crested pet type :) . Some of the show types are showing interest in the boxes more today so hopefully that's a good sign after I swapped a few pairs around.

I have a plague of opalines so I only want normals and spangles now (I don't care if they are cinnamon or greywing, etc as long as they aren't opaline)

okay well I would prefer to put a normal over the spangle so we have the choice of the green or the grey if that suits you. Is our lacewing a spangle tpe lacewing or a normal type wing pattern?

If you decide to breed JB and MB, you could alternate rings like we did, but if JB hasnt any yet, get some uncodeds and then alternate MBs rings with uncodeds...then if JB ever wants to show his birds he can :D

It occurred to me JB may not have rings yet...but uncodeds can be bought through your ring registrar MB through your club. :D

So an uncoded bird can still be shown by basically anyone then??

Yes...here it can.

By HERE do you mean WA or Aus in general?

Here in W.A. is all I know about...check your rulebook that comes with being a club member and check the standard you should have a copy of.

I have the greys brother down to breed at the moment with a great hen so maybe we should go outside that family link and pick this normal for the spangle...

Maybe this guy with your lacewing...trust me he's more impressive in real life and by far the best of the opalines :) Also I know this picture makes himlook dark but he's actually cinnamon so a much better option for you if you were keeping thos chicks for future lacewing breeding, all cocks would be cinnamon and split for ino and all hens would be cinnamon, so next season you would put one of the cocks to a ino or lacewing hen and you should get lacewing chicks

Those two look good to me MB. Seriously whatever your happy with. I'm just stoked that there going to get some action. :)

Cool, now we just have to workout how to organise it all :)

Also can anyone who's joint bred share how they would quarantine in this case. Obviously Lip and Len come from a fairly isolated environment without contact with other budgies so would I still need to quarantine or maybe I could just do a short quarantine...

You would still need to quarantine. Regardless of them living alone for awhile...budgies harbour their own "bugs" they can coexist with...its the mix with others that causes the issues and also the moving to another location. If you do a proper treatment plan for all possibilities ..........psittacosis, coccidiosis, worms, mites etc etc then you could shortcut a little. But best thing is to move them first to MBs place and quarantine all the "interested parties" with treatments before the stress of the move and breeding brings out other issues.

Well both of those two are actually on quarantine at themoment anyway as they are new to my aviary (my chrissy raffle birds) so it'smainly Lip and Len we'd have to worry about :(
