December 6, 200816 yr YES A breeding bird should have a good balanced diet including fruit and veg as well as appropriate supplementation. Also soaked seed or a commercial soft food can be very useful during this time, especially when the chicks hatch
December 6, 200816 yr Nothing beats a good diet. Suppliments are just that..... To suppliment the diet, not to replace it.

December 6, 200816 yr The other thing to consider is that we are still learning about the intricacies of how vitamins and minerals are absorbed, stored and used by the body. Vitamins and Minerals in food are accompanied by so many other things that may be benificial in the way they are absorbed, why mess with something that nature worked out so well. First and foremost your birds should have a great diet. If you read the side of most vitamin bottle it will say Supplements can only be of assistance if the dietary intake is inadequate. They are to fill the gaps where despite our best efforts we fall short Edited December 6, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
December 6, 200816 yr When you boil it all down...on a practical level, the costs of most supplements and vitamins would outway the cost of a few extra fruit and vegies each week which you buy for your family anyway. Choose seasonal vegies and shop at markets (chinese food shops are often very good for green vegies ) . With a little thought and planning you will have happy healthy budgies.
December 6, 200816 yr All good advice... Calcium is a good suppliment durig breeding time but with out Vitamin D3 the body can't asorb it. Phosphorus is a good aditive but too much causes an imbalance in the heart rate. These things are only a few of the many and varied things that need understanding before considering a good supplimentry plan to the natural diet. Start on good fruit and vegies first before delving into suppliments... untill you know or understand what you arte doing..
December 6, 200816 yr If you used supplements do you still need to feed them vegies? YES, YES, YES! In fact you should try to meet your birds nutritional needs with vegies and balanced seed mix and only use supplements in times of breeding and moulting. KISS!
December 6, 200816 yr breeding or not breeding always feed a bird a well rounded diet nothing give back more to our bodies then nature's own minerals and vitamins
December 6, 200816 yr Author Can you buy like the freezen home brand packs of like peas, beans, silverbeet, carrot? Are they fine or are no freezen vegies in packs good?also how long should you leave the vegies in there 1 day 2 days or what?
December 6, 200816 yr Frozen food is very good. I have heard of a few breeders using it. just make sure it is not too cold when you give it to them.
December 6, 200816 yr Author oh good you think Birds eye country harvest is good it has carrot, broccoili, cauliflower, grean beans and red capsicum.I could also add like corn and peas to it to frozen ones I defrost them, put them in the fridge I will then pull them out and give them to them or will that be to cold for them still? Edited December 6, 200816 yr by KAZ edited for shortcuts
December 6, 200816 yr Best thing is to put the amount you want into a bowl and pour some hot water over it, wait for it to defrost for a few minutes and then drain the water off
