Ifyou are planning on having four pairs in there you will need atleast 8 nest boxes. Personally I think it isn't big enough to have four pairs breeding in it.

okay welll this cage is like 3 - 4 times the size of the breeding cages people use so I figured it would be cool for like 8-10 of them. So I need like a box for each bUdgie? is everything else with the setup fine? By The Way thanks for replying so fast.

It's not about the size it's about whether or not the budgies have their own personal space. In a breeding cage the pair doesn't have to worry about another bird harrasing them and trying to steal their nest. What you are trying to do is colony breed and that can be difficult even in the biggest of aviaries. Personally I would be iffy about having two pairs in there but ultimately the decision is yours.

I wouldnt. :D

I would divide top from bottom and have one pair in the top half with a nestbox and one pair in the bottom half with a nestbox and all others removed.

There isnt the territorial space to do four pairs without major issues in that space.

yeah okay I will devide the cage into 2 cages, should it be wire or a board I use to divide it?

If you are dividing it across te middle i'd use board so that the rubbish doesn't fall through.

If you arte dividing it vertically i'd use wire so that the birds can see each other. But make sure the openings are small so that they can't fight.. beak to beak.

Wire will work fine but you will need something else so droppings stays put for cleaning.

great thanks guys will devide across the middle and will have 2 pairs in the cage one in top and one in bottom.O umm last thing food wise, I buy budgie mix home brand most of the time, mix it with shell grit and cuttlefish bone. What other stuff would I need. Like vegies? Spinich, carrots? what other foods should they be getting while on breeding season and off breeeding season?

Home brand seed is rubbish. It contains filler seed which isnt what the birds need. In other words extra rubbish seed..sometimes wheat and oats and other less nutritious seeds that do not help a bird on a daily basis even when not breeding. The reason the homebrand seed isnt economical or a cost saving is because of the seeds in it that the budgies often dont eat. In that way the wastage isnt worth the cost saving at all.

We have great info in our food and nutrition section, but suffice to say birds should get the extras ( vegies etc ) daily and not just when breeding.

Seed ?.................budgie breeder or golden cob supreme mix.

I hold not faith in cuttlebone...its something budgie play with more than take in for its calcium. Calcivet in their water helps with calcium.

Lots more info here on the forum using the search function and looking in our FAQ section.

PS ditch the homebrand seed...it isnt helping your budgies thrive. Better still plant it and feed the greens it sprouts to your birds. They will get more nutrition out of the greens than that seed.

Got to agree with that... I wouldn't have two pair in one cage. It is asking for trouble. Stick to one pair per cage and you'll get less problems.

I have to agree with Kaz on the seed. Until I found this site I would often buy homebrand, then I actually sat down and looked at how much of the seed they were eating and realised that by weight they were probably eating only just over half. As cheap as it is if you take into account what they don't eat and double the cost it's pretty darn expensive. Now I buy my seed from a stockfeed supplier and there is never anything left behind :cake:

I mix my own, that way I know what they are getting.

I must say I have an excellent stockfeed place which is why I am happy to buy my seed premixed, they mix seed to order in the quantities requested and are also responsible for making a number of the specialist tonic seeds used by some of the top members of my club, and lucky for me they are only five minutes down the road :cake:

hi , ive got 2 cage s almost identical to your cage . i keep no more than 6 budgies in each but personally i dont use these big cages for breeding . you have been given great advice already ;)

I mix my own, that way I know what they are getting.

Have you done a thread about this Daz?? If not could you post your amounts of each seed up for us? That would be awesome!

MB where is your seed place?? I know of two, one in Preston and one in Coburg...

I use to use home brand or trill seed and always found lots of left over. I now use the Budgie mix made by the feed and fodder place on Warrigal Rd in burwood and there is NOTHING left (outside of the corn as I mix 50/50 with small parrot mix and the Budgies do not like the dried corn however they do play with it) Since switching seed my guys have all insreased in weight and look better.
