Posted December 1, 200816 yr Roxy is always taking the vegies out of her dishes and dropping through the grates on the cage. Then she tries to eat the food from under the grate. i am forever putting them back in her bowl. I have newspaper under the grate but it does not stop the food from going though. Does anyone elses budgie do this and any suggestions on how to stop her?

December 1, 200816 yr Author I always have the news paper on top of the grate i used to have it that way but she started ripping up the paper and i was not sure if it was good for her to chew the paper.
December 1, 200816 yr Author Thanks for advice, I will go back to the paper on top and hope she does not eat too much paper.
December 1, 200816 yr She wont eat the paper, they all love to chew it!! you should see my breeding cabinets - there is chewed paper everywhere
December 1, 200816 yr Mine do worse than that... they throw them threw the bars of the cage onto the carpet!!! Good luck with the newspaper. I hope it works!
December 1, 200816 yr Author Mine do worse than that... they throw them threw the bars of the cage onto the carpet!!! :laughter: Good luck with the newspaper. I hope it works! i am lucky then that she has not tried that one, she likes to bath in the vegies before she tosses them. I gave her alfalfa sprouts yesterday and by the time she had finished playing she was wet with all these sprouts stuck to her feathers.

You must get a photo of that!!! :laughter: At least she's paying attention to them... and with all that playing, you'd assume she'd eat SOME of it!

She loves eating her vegies but has to play with them as well.
December 1, 200816 yr You can buy really thick plastic by the metre...designed for tabletop protection. Wonder if that would be okay to line the cage with. Easy to wipe down. Spotlight stores and Bunnings carry it.
December 1, 200816 yr The one I could never work out was how mine managed to flick their dropping horizontally out the sides of their cage onto my fridge Edited December 1, 200816 yr by Neat
December 1, 200816 yr Author The one I could neer work out was how mine managed to flick their dropping horizontally out the sides of their cage onto my fridge i have wonder that one as well, my big cage that the boys are in is next to a wall and i am always wiping poo of the wall.

Spotlight stores and Bunnings carry it. I tried that one and it looked great at first, but then it started to look dirty real quick. I now use a piece of busy patterned fabric which blends in with the poop and mess. its easy to clean with a shake out side and a wash here and there
December 1, 200816 yr Deb can you use a Chinese food container ... No need to fill it ... It would be big enough for her to bathe in the veggies and you can use those Place mats ( the hard plastic or the PVC ones) underneath it if you are worried about the newspaper ( I agree with liv they chew rather then eat it )
December 1, 200816 yr I agree with newspaper on top just always make sure it is clean from feces, Merlin doesn't go down on his but because she does and she is foraging you have to be extra clean about that, you can put layers too that helps so like 4 layers and then she only chews the top or if it gets dirty you take off the top layer and you have a clean layer underneath, that is what I do. Roxie is such a stinker
December 1, 200816 yr I bought long hard plastic planter bottoms, they are about 12inch long and about 6inch wide I put them in the middle of my wire cages away from the perches and I sit their seed and veges on them. I have also bpought big sqaure too. They all work well. They have a lip of about an inch.
