November 28, 200816 yr Yep, certainly do, everytime I'm cutting up the vegies for the birds I think how healthy I would be if I just ate half the vegies they do. The sad thing is I always seem to feel to tired at the end of the day when making dinner to bother with the fresh vegies that I cut up for the birds in the morning when I'm still fresh, I me and my family end up with the same old frozen peas and corn. What a bad Mother I am, feeding my birds better than my children. :tut_tut:
November 28, 200816 yr Author I'm hoping to give myself no choice next year. When we finally get our own place the first thing that will be going in is a humungous kitchen garden, a mini orchard plus the chooks for meat and eggs which I hope will eventually supply 90% of our fresh food, the I won't even be buying the frozen ones
November 28, 200816 yr I have just begun a herb garden, and tomato plants in pots outside my birdroom so I can put extras in their softfood. I would love to have chooks again...had them all the years I lived in Tassie. But no room here for chooks.
November 28, 200816 yr Missing your fresh eggs KAZ? My birds eat much better than me. My Mother in Law was tempted to eat their food the other day when she found out what they got to eat! Edited November 28, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
November 28, 200816 yr Missing your fresh eggs KAZ? You bet !! :feedbirds: Nothing like home grown eggs
November 28, 200816 yr Author If you have space for aviaries surely you could squish a few chooks in somewhere. When we had chooks a few years ago we used to keep them down the sideway of the house, it was a couple of metres wide and almost the full length of the house block so it was plenty of space for five chooks and we got HEAPS of eggs from them. The only reason I don't have some now is becaue my hubby has banned me until we move to the new house
November 28, 200816 yr The soft food my darlings get daily is delicious! There's no doubt in my mind that my pets live a cherished life! In fact I go to work to keep them in the life of luxury they have become accustomed to ...
November 28, 200816 yr I agree, that I really need to eat as healthy as Merlin, in fact I was thinking that maybe they are not all that picky maybe we are

November 28, 200816 yr Author Yeah we had to fence off the sideway as we had a lab X boxer who used to 'steal' the chooks if he managed to get in. He never hurt any but he did used to carry them and pop them in his kennel and also bury them up to their necks If we went out and realised the chooks were missing we knew we would have to go and dig a couple up and dust them off

I don't think Kaz's dogs would be so kind though!
November 28, 200816 yr Author Yeah very strange, you would just find this little chook head sticking up out of the ground
November 28, 200816 yr Author Yep He left their heads out so they could breathe Edited November 28, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
November 29, 200816 yr We have fresh eggs here Kaz, everyday we get 3 eggs as we have 3 chooks, beautiful dark colour yolks not those pale yellow ones from the supermarket. Edited November 29, 200816 yr by splat
November 29, 200816 yr Can bantams be kept in the bottom of a large aviary with parrots, finches and canaries ?
November 29, 200816 yr Author I reckon they'd be okay, I've been thinking about sneaking a few in myself Kaz as my large aviary down the back currently only has two lorikeets in it
