My Poor Ringneck Baby-

Featured Replies

Posted

For those that aren't aware I have been handraising a couple of baby ringnecks, they graduated to the aviary last week but within about 3 days the younger of the two suddenly looked VERY sick. I brought her inside and had her looked at and our first thought was the dreaded 'P' word so she has had Doxy for the last 4 or 5 days. Unfortunately she hasn't responded at all to this (infact she continued to deteriorate) and so back she went. Well the up side of her not responding is that it's unlikely its 'psit....'...argh I can't even say it!!! So she was swapped onto Baytril. Well the poor thing still looks awful but she's sitting up straighter now and had a bit of a scratch around before so I'm telling myself the Baytril is starting to kick in and she's feeling a bit perkier

Anyway, cross you fingers for me please that she pulls through.

Oh... I hope she makes it! Don't they do tests for those illness'??? So you're not just guessing with the medication?

Poor thing once she has finished the anti biotic give her some added probotics

The psitticosis test has a fairly slow turn around so you just have to treat in the meantime and see what happens, given she had no response to the psittivet over that amount of time we made the choice to change her onto something else rather than waiting for test results ;)

She isn't eating on her own again so she is getting the Vetafarm neocare which has the probiotics and predigestives in it ;)

Got you! ;) Good luck with her mate.

Entirely possible she just went backwards and stopped eating properly once in the aviary ;)

I was checking her regularly and still topping her up once a day if I felt she hadn't eaten enough so I know she was eating, she only stopped eating the day she got sick. She was mainly out there because I wanted her to start eating more and once she saw the adults eating she did, but then got sick. She's not a well chicky, lots of greeny coloured mucous from her nostrils and watery, half closed eyes. Poor little chicken

Is it possible she caught a chill and has a respiratory issue now ?

Sometimes the youngsters get wet in drinkers last thing at night and then are wet for the whole night....if something like that happened then only the wet one would get the chill.

Hey MB I hope she pulls through for you, I know how much time and effort you put into your animals and I really don't know how you do it, with 2 little boys to keep you on your toes aswell. Keep us posted to her progress.

Luckily for her my budgie babies have all graduated into budgie kinder and don't need the brooder now so she has taken up residence in it for the warmth on the chilly nights

I have all my fingers crossed

....makes it very hard to type though :)

Here's the little girly, photos a bit dark as I didn't want to upset her by turning the bright light on suddenly. She's doing a good job of messing up the brooder I just finished cleaning

Looking a little perkier I think, she's now perched up on the edge of the food bowl and has actually attempted to climb out of the brooder a couple of times. She seems to have less discharge from her nose and her eyes aren't watery now but they are still half closed. So far, so good I think

 a step in the right direction! Excellent.

Gosh she has messed the brooder up though flicking handrearing formula all over the place, it's definately going to need a clean today!!

She has been bringing up a little bit of her feed each time I feed her (just a little) so I've been inserting her antibiotics into the tip end of the syringe with her food so that when I feed her the antibiotics end up right at the bottom of her crop where they hopefully will be absorbed fairly quickly and also less likely to be brought up if she regurgitates any of her feed

I have my fingers crossed for her - she is so pretty
