Served grated raw beetroot, grated carrot, chopped endive and budgie starter mixed through ( budgie starter was for the babies ). None left in the bowls after 15 minutes. One set of parents had to have seconds as they fed it to their chicks and came back for more.

The bowl was full...but not for long

AAAAAARGH!!! Attack of the killa budgies!!

 My inside budgies will NEVER get beetroot. Why? Because they throw everything on to the carpet and I don't want to have to try and get the stain out!!! lol.

OMG! It's like something out of a B grade horror movie :o

I seriously for a moment thought that this one

had gone in the nest and killed the babies. :D

The beetroot stains on him were like blood due to his grey green colouring.

:o

If i couldn't read I would have sworn they were bleeding .... And here I thought my orange bird was a food lover

:o OMG what a mess they made!!

What happens if you have stained budgies in a show??

this one so needs to be called DEXTER or TIGER or HANNIBAL because he looks like he has just committed a mass murder :D !!!!

;)

You cannot...so any feeding of messy food must be stopped days before a show :D

Doesn't that stain their feathers permanently though?

No. its usually gone in about 3 days. I recall a very good show breeder once bringing his birds to auction and every one of them had beetroot face...was quite funny at the time ;)

Funny Kaz, When I first gave mine beetroot I forgot I gave it to them and when I went out to the breeding cages I got such a big fright, I thought OH my gosh someone has killed someone and franticly looking around and then it hit me. BEETROOT

Me too. I seriously thought the spangle had killed his babies

I can just see it now, the chicks in the nest box and Dad comes in and the chick panic "Sh*t! His done Mum in and now his coming for us!", "Hang on a second taste that stuff it's great give us more!", "I don't care if it makes a mess, just hurry! I WANT IT NOW!"

How often do you feed this to your birds?

Depends on when they are going to a budgie show :D

Twice a week with beetroot as a rule. If going to a budgie show they dont get any for a week or so.

They get vegies every day though, but not always with beetroot.

Mine doesn't seem to like vegies. I've left grated carrot and diced broccoli in his cage but he hasn't touched it. I don't know if its because he isn't used to the new dish, but I can't leavie it in there for days so he can get used to it as I have to remove the vegies after a day.

How did you get them to start eating vegies in the first place?

i tried a grape first with Bing and pierced it and let him suck and chew on it in my hand... then i moved onto grated carrot and gave that to him by hand...

a good tip is to give him millet first, then offer the vege so he realises what you want him to do with it...

good luck :D

Thanks Andrew, he loves millet and eats that out of our hands so I'll give your idea a go.

Try sweetcorn on the cob first...its sweet and they usually have a go at that. Try different ways of serving the vegies, grated is good.....grated carrot and fine sliced greens. Sprinkle budgie seed over and through it. :D

what about crushing it into like a pesto??? has anyone tried that??? I was thinking the other day I might try something like that and then put it into iceblock trays and give one a day... any thoughts?
