Posted November 28, 200816 yr hey, well i found a perfect set of drawers we are not going to use any more and i thought i could make it into a breeding cabinet. i would take out the drawers and set up a divider so i can have a kindie cage at the botom. but i was wondering is perspex okay to use or should i use wire mesh or glass? oh and one more question what would be the right size for a breeding cage and a kindie cage? thanks. well i hope you guys can give me some ideas! xxElisexx Edited November 28, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 28, 200816 yr Wire mesh is the best bet as they can hurt themselves on perspex/glass if they don't see it. You could put a short piece of perspex infront of the wire along the bottom edge of each cage though to try and help contain seed It's important that the drawers are made of something that is budgie safe, can you post a picture?
November 28, 200816 yr My breeding cabinets are 40cm long and 35 cm deep and I think about 40 cm high if i am wrong will let you know tomorrow.
November 28, 200816 yr We have a lot of information on this forum on breeding cabinets ............look in the cage section and our FAQ
November 28, 200816 yr Make sure that the drawers are big enough to house 7-10 budgies .... comfortably
November 28, 200816 yr You might want to sand down the drawers before you put the budgie in too.. not sure what treatments the wood my have had that the budgie's might not be safe nibbling... It might work out to be a really good idea though. The biggest pain would be trying to find wire fronts that fit comfortably... I know I've looked around and some places have them others don't... it can be very annoying as none of them seem to stock the same size... lol
November 29, 200816 yr Author okay it is: 88cm long 37cm deep 11o cm high but im am splitting it lanscape so the top will be 53 cm high and the bottom is 55cm high would this be bigg enough? for one pair on the top half and the kindie cage at the bottom? thanks xx Elise xx
November 29, 200816 yr Author yay! how big should i make the perches? and what should the perches be made out of ? xx Elise xx
November 29, 200816 yr natural perches are best but you can use anything round. as long as the are thick enough that they won't bend when the budgies land on them... they will want to be firm otherwise the budgies won't mate. Have you thought about where you are going to put the nest box?? It needs to be somewhere that is easily accessable because you will need to check 2 times a day (morning and night) on the chicks... Good luck with it.
November 30, 200816 yr Author thanks, i am going to put the breeding boxes outside the cage? also do i need a heat lamp in the kindie cage? xxElisexx Edited November 30, 200816 yr by LILBABYBUDGIES
December 2, 200816 yr Author yay well thats all set now a male... lol i suppose i cant breed with two females!
December 2, 200816 yr nope but the good news is you've got a male. don't forget to keep the calcium levels up and make sure that they are eating properly before you start the breeding process :laughter: Edited December 2, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
December 3, 200816 yr Author well if it is a male im sure it would be too young how old do you think it would be ? also i have new news . my aunty used to breed cockatiels and no longer needs her aviary . its soo big you could drive a car in it no problem. i have an offer to have it will breeding in a aviary make it harder? Edited December 3, 200816 yr by KAZ
December 3, 200816 yr Breeding overall is hard, there is nothing easy about breeding budgies. Check out the FAQ's and use the search function to find the pro's and con's of the different methods of breeding Awesome about the free aviary!!
December 3, 200816 yr Author okay thanks xx Elise xxwell i think i have a plan.i dont know if perants will agree lol im amazed im even allowd to breed. okay so my plan is i use the avery as my flight and use the cabnit for breeding. does this sound good.?
December 3, 200816 yr okay so my plan is i use the avery as my flight and use the cabnit for breeding. does this sound good.? This sounds like a very smart idea. :raincloud: But make sure your cabinet is inside or if outside it has a net over the top of it... otherwise you might find birds escaping when you open the nest box and stuff... and there are a few member who recently had this happen, through no fault of there own. so be careful.
December 3, 200816 yr As I just told Charlie I think old furniture is wonderful to put to new uses for keets. Breeding cabinets, small flights, etc... I did one a year ago when I got my first 2 keets (now I have over 30) but it came out okay... just needed to make better ventalation on it. Good luck. Post pics so we can see how it comes out.
December 4, 200816 yr they don't try flying into the perspex? That looks great. Edited December 4, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
