Posted November 28, 200816 yr We've never really interacted with our budgies before as much as we do with Ernie, so i'm not all that familiar with tame budgie behavior. When we go to get Ernie out for a fly sometimes he seems really reluctant and just continually steps up and then as soon as you move your finger away from the perch he hops straight off. When you do finally get him out, he just sits on your finger the whole time. Whereas at other times, usually in the morning he hops from perch to perch right in front of the door, and as soon as you open the door, zoom!!, he's out and flying up and down the hallway. After a few minutes he lands somewhere, usually on a picture or on someones head and is then happy to be held or put back in the cage. My question is, are all budgies this good at communicating their desires and why would he be so different at different times. Is it just he knows when he has excess energy and needs to burn it off and other times he just wants to chill out?
November 28, 200816 yr They all have their different moods for the different times of the day. They have a real distinct play rest pattern. All my birds rest and play at the same times of the day... when they are resting they don't want to be handled and are cranky. When its play time they fly around sing and play with their toys etc. Edited November 28, 200816 yr by **Liv**
November 28, 200816 yr Author Ah I see, that certainly describes his behavior! Is there a typical time of the day for each mood or does it vary from budgie to budgie?
November 28, 200816 yr I think it varies, but first thing in the morning seems to be a biggie for play time, and obviously night for rest. I'm not so sure about the rest of the day in between.
November 28, 200816 yr What I find is first thing in the morning when they wake up this is the best time to introduce them to anything new food, toys, play and then after that mid-morning/early afternoon is nap time and then later afternoon/early evening they perk up again and love to chat once again and then evening brings sleep time. If you watch the birds in the wild they act the same way if you listen on a summer day you will find that the afternoons are quiet compared to first thing in the morning where everyone is tweetering around. . Remember around 12 it gets really hot in the day for a wild bugdie so this would be the time they would settle to conserve energy, first thing in the moring and later in the day it is cooling off and so they become active again. It is nature . Edited November 28, 200816 yr by Elly
