Heavy Breathing At Night?

Featured Replies

Hi. i have a hen here belongs to my gf, i saw her earlier today and she was breathing kinda heavy, she was sitting back on the perch and her vent was contracting(?) i suppose you could say, i thought she may have been going to lay, but no egg and it's nearly 9pm. I was wondering what to do with her. I have her in a hospital cage, and she's marching around wanting to get out, and i really need to be able to tell trish whats going on when she gets home, cause i'm already kinda in some trouble, and she has enough on her plate. HELP HELP HELP

Thanks Sean

oh. i have some sulpha quin here, should i give her some? How do i make her drink it?

Are you very sure she isnt eggbound ?

Sulpha meds is for runny poos.

Does she look sick? Have you got a light on her for warmth? Can you give her a drop of calcivit on her beak (this will help if she is having trouble laying) Doe she have an egg bum/large runny droppings?

aside from the breathing, contracting and sitting back on the perch (earlier today), you wouldn't even know that there is anything wrong

If she was about to lay an egg, she's have an egg bum and have big sloppy poos

the only med things i can find is worm rid, sulpha quin, and two bottles. One says diet raspberry cordial, not for kids to drink, and the other one has tea bags in it????????

Does she have any staining about her nostils?

do i leave her in with the heat?no staining

I'd leave the heat on for her and see how she is in the morning. Others might have more of an idea thought... but with those symptoms, I'm not sure.

I agree with Maesie..... no point in the meds though unless there are specific indicators of illness. Does sound like eggbinding, so further inspection for an egg ? Maybe a soft shelled egg ? Either way some calcivet will help.

i called her just to ask a general question, and she says she doesn't have any calcivet. She immediately demanded to know what was going wrong. I told her i was just chatting. She's gonna be peaved when she gets home, but if i told her she would have left work then and there. Do you buy calcivet from petshops or from vets? Hopefully she'll make it through the night, cause we've just found out that there is an avian vet 20mins away, so i'll take her tomorrow.

Try some honey diluted with water ans see if she will take some. Be careful she doesnt breathe it in and aspirate. OR just put some honey in her water if she will drink.

Keep the warm lamp on all night near her.

Morning all. Trish is due home in about 15 mins, the budgies condition hasn't changed, took the light off her, she started huffing and puffing and amiee (my daughter) said that "she was getting to hot and that if i fried her before tricia got to see her, then she really will kill me". Heres hoping she pulls through, and thankyou for all your help last night

I hope your bird will be okay, it probably would be worth taking her to the vet or at least ringing and asking the vet for some advice. That's what I do I always ring him first and see what he says and sometimes I send him dropping samples and he checks them and sends me medication but that's when it is not really serious.

But when serious straight to the vet and no mucking around.

he has an overactive imagination. The bird got a little excited and now shes fine. She may lay in the next couple of days, it's only her first. But he is in trouble. If some of you remember i had a bunch of birds for sale. I had a couple of people interested, i had even arranged transport, and then yesterday he went and sold all bar one pair, which amiee hid, to some guy for $10 each, while i was at work mind you, even my keepers. which is why there was trouble yesterday with the hen, they took her cock bird out and then when amiee hid them, she just grabbed the first cock bird she could and the hen didn't appreciate it very much, she told sean about an hour after the guy had left, and that was when he noticed. If she hasn't settled completly by tomorrow i will take her to her vet just for a checkup. Thank you all for try to help him yesterday.

I hope everything works out... and she is okay! ;)
