Posted November 26, 200816 yr I know it probably seems like such a small thing to those that don't have kids but those that do have kids will know how difficult it can be to get them to eat not only thier vegies but particularly salad. Having spent every midweek day at childcare until very recently I was finding this particularly difficult so now that they are home fulltime I've been working on it. I didn't think I was getting anywhere until this morning. I got all the bits out to make the birds food up and started chopping things up. Next thing I know both my boys are there snacking away on raw beans, carrots and even raw brocolli! They have also discovered that they really like purple cabbage It's one small step for Max and Alex but one giant leap towards a happy mum :laughter:
November 26, 200816 yr Aww excellent!!! I may not be a mum, but i'm as close to one as it gets to my nephew Kain with caring for him full time and I can totally relate to the whole no salad thing, all he'll eat from it is the cheese unles I cover the tomatoes in salt LOL! Well done Mummy MB :laughter:
November 26, 200816 yr Well MB I can't say I'm with you on the salad thing because for some reason both my son and my daughter LOVE salad... but I can totally relate to you on MEAT. My son hates meat and wouldn't eat any of it. Not chicken, not a hot dog, pork.... nothing... One day we went out to eat and one of the meals they ate had toothpics with it and they started poking some of their food and eating it with toothpics... so I got the idea to cut their meat up into shapes and put a toothpic in it... NOW, any meat you put on their plate they will eat (espeically if there is something to dip it in like ketchup or dressing)... and for me to get my 3 and 5 year old kids to eat veggies and meat... :laughter: LOL whatever happen to the days when your parents said eat what's on the plate and don't get up until it's gone or you'll be eating it cold for your next meal.... AND MEANT IT!!! Edited November 26, 200816 yr by chrissy0705
November 26, 200816 yr Author That's where I'm at too, I think they get away with alot at childcare which is probably why I was finding it so hard at home, there was a massive double standard to contend with :laughter: Now that the only standard they have to adhere to is mine they are actually starting to eat all their food.
November 26, 200816 yr That's great, I never had trouble with my boys, but my partners daughters kids won't eat salad they are 2 and 5. The oldest will only eat beetroot.
November 26, 200816 yr Author My oldest hates beetroot, I offered it to him once and he thought it looked great and crunched into it and then started dry reaching :laughter: Personally I don't blame him, I can't stand the stuff
November 26, 200816 yr Author I'm a strange one though I love most fruit but I HATE bananas and watermelon, both of which my kidlets adore.
November 26, 200816 yr Most kids like vegies raw instead of cooked. When I had trouble with my kids eating vegies many many moons ago :laughter: ..... we ended up renaming some food broccoli was baby trees Cauliflower was baby white trees Mashed potato with mashed pumpkin in it was yellow potato or "mashed chippies" My youngest daughter hated vegies of any kind but would happily eat them in a soup. Â you need to be a psychologist sometimes being a parent. Edited November 26, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 26, 200816 yr Yep went through that Kaz, cauliflower was a white tree and broccoli green tree same as you and soup was the go for veges :laughter:
November 26, 200816 yr Author My kids will eat their vegies cooked never had trouble with that it was salad I was struggling with. My oldest thinks I'm a food nazi. On a couple of occasions he has 'decided' he doesn't like things anymore. Once he decided that he wasn't going to eat carrots any more so the next night he got a bowl of carrots which had to be eaten before the rest of his dinner arrived, another time he spent a day in the kinder and saw all the 'big kids' not eating the crusts off their bread so he decided he wouldn't either so for lunch I cut the crusts off and served those first and the rest of his sandwich arrived once they were eaten!! That was when he was about 3 and he's 4 1/2 now and he growls at his little brother for not eating his crusts :laughter:
November 26, 200816 yr awesome MB, my son is the picky eater, my daughter is very good at trying different foods.
November 26, 200816 yr That is really a great achievement MB, as a mum of 4 i understand the battle with getting kids to eat the right food. i still can not get my 5 year old to eat vegies or salad which means my 3 year old thinks that she does not have to eat them either.
November 26, 200816 yr Funniest thing on tv lately, a lady couldnt get her boys to eat vegies so she gave them a 'Fart rating' out of 5. Vegies make ya fart, brocholi was a 4 and cabbage/ cauliflower a 5 etc etc. The boys thought it was a great idea, ate all their vegies as they wanted good farts. Well done though MB once kids have decided they arent going to eat things anymore it can be hard, I have all this to look forward to.
November 26, 200816 yr my auntie got her kids to eat there vegies by mixing them all into a blender, mainly greens and she said to them "eat your Shrek" like out of the movie because it is green and now they cant wait to have their Shrek!
November 26, 200816 yr Author That's a funny idea Pie although maybe encourage one bad behaviour while solving another... Personally I spend almost as much time teaching my oldest to be polite and that farts aren't a joke so maybe not the method for me
