Posted November 24, 200816 yr Hi everyone, I just bought my first budgie today, and I forgot to ask the person I bought it from if it was a boy or girl... Does anyone know? And maybe a rough guess of how old it is? Also does anyone know what type it is? Lots of questions I forgot to ask.. lol. These are the best pictures I have at the moment. November 24, 200816 yr Can you take a close up of the cere (nose area) without a flash. It's a cremino and by the look of those pics I would guess a girl but a closer photo would help lots. Also as cremino is a version of albino (it is a albino that also has the yellow face gene) and albino is sex linked it is more likely to be a girl anyway.

I'll go with hen too, but I don't think it's a creamino. Eyes look black and the belly looks grey to me (on my monitor anyway)
November 24, 200816 yr Hmm, could be a DF spangle Yellow face. Can you tell us if the eyes are red or black please?
November 25, 200816 yr A better picture of the front and back of the bird would help. I do see the suffusion of grey that you are talking about but I see the yellow running through the bird too. Does the bird have red eyes? What is the color of the body of the bird? Right now it does look like a hen to me too.
November 25, 200816 yr I was thinking suffusion too Elly but not sure but she could be cinnamon grey opaline yellow face spangle With bad spangle markings which is classed as bad variety. Edited November 25, 200816 yr by splat
November 25, 200816 yr Author It is white and a pale yellow.... I cant really see any grey. with black eyes... The stomach is pretty much white, with he head, back and tail yellow.. That yellowy-brown spot on the wing is just dirty, not part of its colour!! Any idea how old??
November 25, 200816 yr In this picture the bird looks more male. here is my conclusion It is a Double Factor Spangle which means that when he grows up his cere will turn blue and he will develop visible iris rings. OR It is a Dark Eyed Clear in which case if it is a cock the cere will remain pink and the bird will not develop visible iris rings. But for sure it is a Yellow Face Type 2 You will know better as the bird matures around the 6-8 month mark, since you don't know the parents you will have to wait. It is a bit hard to tell the age because there are no bar lines but I will say around 3-4 months. Edited November 25, 200816 yr by Elly
November 25, 200816 yr Better photos that you can actually see the colour. So on this I agree with Elly
November 26, 200816 yr Me too, Df spangle yf, and you're right, it does look male in this one :laughter:
November 26, 200816 yr Author So it looks like hes a boy!! Thanks everyone!! So hes a Double factor spangled yellow face? Can anyone tell me much about his breed then?

You asked if he is a DFS, you can't be sure until he is around 6 months to see if his cere turns blue or stays pinks that will help determine which mutation he is, above is my explanation. It is not considered a breed like in a dog it is considered a mutation on a budgie. Double Factor Spangle is when a bird gets 1 spangle gene from both parents vs the Single Factor where the Spangle marking is visible and they only get 1 gene from 1 of the parents. The dark-eyed clear is actually a combination of recessive pied and clearflight pied. When these two mutations are both present, the budgie is has no markings or color. It is either pure yellow (if it is a yellow-based budgie) or pure white (if it is a white-based budgie). The dark-eyed clear's dark eyes never lighten with age, hence the name. November 26, 200816 yr I too say it is a YF ( yellow face) DF ( double Factor) spangle .... The first photo looked female however the last one looks male ... is there any White on the cere or is it all Purple or blue I would also agree with Elly on the age being between 3-5 months
November 27, 200816 yr Author No theres no white on the cere. Its allight blue at the top and changes to light purple down the bottom..
November 27, 200816 yr Still say hen Hens cere's change from milky blue/white/tan/brown Males cere's change from pink/purple/blue
