Line Breeding

Well the title says it all.. Does anyone here do it? It seems very popular in Europe but I don't know if alot of people do it here... Seems to much like in breeding to me... Anyone??

Most show breeders I have talked to generally say choose one or two breeders to buy your stock from and go from there. I have bought lots of birds from lots of places, but I think I would line breed my birds that are showing good qualities. Too much of a newby to have gone there yet ;)

Take a lookie here ----> http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....l=line+breeding[/quote

Just had a look - wow! I guess the only thing I can add is that in the wild the flocks are in-breeding all the time which is why all the birds look so similar. They don't check out each other's genealogy before pairing up. Nature takes a hand when a pair produces unfit chicks by letting them die or be prey. Many okay chicks go the same way but the survivors conform to the type best equipped to carry on the species. Lots more I could say but that's probably enough for now. Jaz

Yes I line Breed but not to close relatives.

LIne Breeding when it works, inbreeding when it does not.

I know people who put brothers to sisters and sons to mothers and daughters to fathers. It seems to work for them.

70% of my budgies come from 2 breeders so I breed with the best birds from those "families". This year I was breeding cousin to cousin.

I am going to breed based on visual features and compatibility but I will still breed related birds together.

Yes I line breed but I do bring in out crosses too then go back to the line again. My birds are improving all the time.

Splat thats right you have to bring in outcrosses. This is how you fill in those missing pieces that are there.

You should look at least one outcross per year.

I wish I could stop at that.... :D

haha I can imagine daz. I guess thats why keeping good records is so important. Is it harder to improve your flock if you continue to bring in outcrosses?
