Posted November 24, 200816 yr We went to the vet just now to get something to treat scaly face, but the vet didn't have anything and when I told her it was for SF she just said to go to a pet store to get something for it. But in here people say don't get stuff from the pet store... I would have thought the vet knew what she was talking about? And the pet store stuff says it treat mites and stuff, and I thought they weren't allowed to say it treats something if it doesn't, because that's false advertising? And also the vet said that all wooden perches must be replaced, but the pet store stuff just says to spray the perches. Is there any way to disinfect them so we don't have to replace them?
November 24, 200816 yr It will treat them but generally slowly and requiring lots of repeat treatment.
November 24, 200816 yr Get bird mite and lice spray and spray the cage, toys and perches - might as well give the birds a spray too while you are doing it .
November 24, 200816 yr Author The Avitrol bird mite and lice spray is the one I was looking at in the pet store, but I thought I'd ask before getting anything. So is it worth getting, or should I just go to a different vet and get the ivermectin? I can't drive my partner's sports car (stupid gears) so he'd have to drive me to a vet, but the pet store is in walking distance, so if the pet store stuff works I'll stick with that. Even if I have to repeat the treatment it's really cheap and one bottle should last ages... But I'll do whatever you recommend, you're the gurus:)
November 24, 200816 yr I have Avitrol - works for me I'd go for that I should add though.... the avitrol wont treat the scaly face i believe - the bottle doesn't mention it. How bad is the scaly face. if its fairly minor you can treat it with cooking oil Edited November 24, 200816 yr by **Liv**
November 24, 200816 yr Rub some baby oil on the cere and the feet this will give the stuff you get from the petstore a jump start. I would treat all the perches, if you can get detol and soak the perches in that for about 20 mins with hot water then allow to dry overnight before replacing. Also clean the cage with detol and let dry before placing the bird back in. I would then spray the bird, cage and perches with the spray every few days and reapply Baby oil every day untill the mites go away. Keep itup for a week after all signs are gone to be on the safe side. If you can get Ivermtin from the vet then that would be the best option and the easiest but the other stuff works just as well just more time consuming.
November 24, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the excellent advice:) I don't really like the thought of having to catch them every day to rub oil on them... I'll check if the pet store has anything for SF, the vet said they would. If not, I'll go to a different vet and get ivermectin. Thanks for the tip on detol, will definitely get some of that:)
November 24, 200816 yr The treatment from the pet shop will have to be applied more than once too, that is the reason I recommend Ivermec it's a once only treatment. If you call a local bird club they may be able to sell you some or tell you where to get it

If you call a local bird club they may be able to sell you some or tell you where to get it More on scaly face. Before I used Ivermec I used vaseline. I started off with cooking oil but it messes up the feathers something fierce, the vaseline is much cleaner. What you are doing is smothering the mites so they suffocate and die. Don't forget to treat the feet and particularly under the ring if the bird is carrying one. Ivermec is the treatment of choice but I do have concerns about its environmental impact. My aviary waste is composted and used on garden beds. Ivermec kills worms and the googling I have done to find out about its life in the soil hasn't yielded any unambiguous information. People have lost all the worms in their worm farms by adding horse manure from horses which have been wormed using Ivermec-type worming treatments. I usually treat with Ivermec once or twice a year and always provide branches of lemon-scented t-tree which, reputedly, is a natural wormer and antibiotic. I have had no signs of scaly face or worms for many years. If we are handling the substance while treating birds we are probably also giving ourselves a worm treatment! Jaz
November 24, 200816 yr I do not use Ivermec internally, I use it externally only, but the same could be said about any worming treatment. I only treat my birds with Ivermectin about twice a year and more if I need (on an individual bird basis). I also supply lemon scented tea tree
November 25, 200816 yr Author Are you saying that ivermectin also treats worms? The pet store stuff sounds like a hassle, with repeated treatments. I checked the list of avian vets and there's one a 15 min drive from here, and I guess they will definitely have ivermectin, so I'll go with that. Thanks:)
November 25, 200816 yr Ivermectin taken internally treats worms but the jury is still out on whether the spot on version treats worms. Personally I treat with Ivermectin spot on a couple of times a year plus I worm them with a wormer in their water four times a year

November 25, 200816 yr Author Oh good, cause I bought some wormer today and I wouldn't have liked it if it was a waste of money:) Edited November 28, 200816 yr by Neat Cahnged CUZ to Cause Short Cut Text is not allowed ... Thank you
November 27, 200816 yr Author Went to another vet today and they had nothing, so we checked a couple of pet stores and they only had stuff that works the same as cooking oil. And this is just getting too difficult.. didn't someone say that 'any vet will have it' about ivermectin? I tried to find somewhere online to buy it, but the only ones I could find were for horses and they wanted 100s of dollars for them. So does anyone know where I can buy it online without getting ripped off, or do any budgie owners in my area have any and can spare a couple of drops? I'm in Murrumba Downs, north of Brisbane...

Unfortunately it can be hard to get as lots of vets don't like selling it for use on budgies... as it's not made for them... as such. Can you contact a local Budgie club... I'd think they could sell you some. Good luck and I hope you get your hands on some
November 28, 200816 yr I have half a small bottle I could post you if you like. It costs me $3 a bottle, not sure how much postage would be, can't imagine much Edited November 28, 200816 yr by Neat
November 28, 200816 yr Been given some great advice ... Just be careful when using Vaseline for the first time it can be tricky not to get it on in up their nostrils .... That Atristo Pet Scaly face treatment is **** don't waste your money .....
