New Breeder

Kaz, has suggested that i introduce myself here as she has advised me alot of people might think im just wanting to purchase budgies to sell as a wholesaler or petshop.

this is incorrect. i am just getting back into breeding budgies and am going into partnership with my father.

I shall be joining a club, just deciding on which one to join. Shall go to the Blacktown meeting this Friday to have a lot.

At present i have 40 cabinets that i am trying to find quality birds to pair up.

I am hoping to have 30 cabinets at my place and 30 at my dads place breeding. We are wanting to specialise in Dominant Pieds.

So the way i am going to be doing it shall be a good normal to a Domiant Pied in every cage.

I do have some yellow face, Lutinos, Albino, Spangles and DF spangles too, just for something different.

As im sure everyone can understand it isnt easy finding good quality birds at present. I have alot of great Hens which may sound very weird, but i know they are usually hard to find so when the opportunities came up to purchase good quality Hens i purchased them.

How many cabinets do most people here run. Do they find it hard keeping the bird room clean, when having larger numbers?

I shall try and take some images of my birds when i get a chance so people can see.

I am only running 8 breeding cages at the moment, we are hoiping to move house in the first half of next year and then I will be setting u a purpose built breeding room with a larger number so for the moment I am just focusing on breeding some nice stock from my own birds to hold over for next season

It all comes down the quality and not quantity.

If you can get some good bloodlines going, then you are heading down the right track.

i hate it when you have a great cock or hen, and they never take to any bird.

Unfortunately my best cock killed himself in the breeding cage this season but I did manage to get two promising looking daughters out of him who are just fledged so I am looking forward to breeding them next season now. I have just put my birds down for a second round before wrapping it up for this year. I may bring one of two pairs inside to breed over winter but I haven't decided yet

I run 18 cabinets, but currently don't even have half of those filled and breed pet types aswell as trying my hand at shows ;)

Hi BB 09, I had 19 cages going this year, 14 last year and next year I think I will go back to 14 or 15, just sold a back of 4.

Yes I think the breeding room gets very messy with a large number of cages always cleaning,

at the moment I have 4 cages still going and it is much easier only because I have had enough being breeding since end of March so can't wait to get the room empty.

I agree quality is so much more important than quantity

Good luck with your pieds as That is what I want to do but I can't seem to get hold of any good ones, I have put 2 pieds cocks down this year and no good pied babies but the normals that came out of the nest are great.

Where abouts do you live?

I know some good breeders around here of pieds but they are costly which I can't afford.

Hi BB, sounds like we're almost neighbours. 20 cabinets is plenty for me. Because of extraordinary circumstances this year I ran 40 and found the workload much too great when working full time. A lot depends on your work commitments and if there is anybody else to give you a hand. Also the layout of your cabinets and the routines for feeding and cleaning are important. Specialisation is good. Something of a miracle for you to have secured a large number of good hens - usually you have to start of with whatever you can get, and built up from there. Come to our club and have a look too, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to advertise a club or meeting on the forum so will wait for advice. Good luck, Jaz

Yes, you may Jaz...not a problem ;)

I only have 9 cabinets and i am finding that hard to deal with! I must be lazy!

I will be at the meeting on friday so i will look forward to seeing you there.

My second reply. I have been told it's okay to tell others about clubs and meetings. I'm a member of Riverlands branch of the BSNSW and we meet at the Neighbourhood Centre at Emu Plains on the 2nd Friday of each month at 7.30. Next meeting is our Christmas party so come along BB and meet the crowd. Even if you don't join our club we welcome visitors. Jaz

thats a bit of a hike. Im in Castle Hill. Its only a bit of a hobby for me, maybe in a few years my dad and myself might look at showing them, but at present i want to just experiment.Ive got a different setup, with a larger seed hooper which should last the birds a week, and ive got extra large water containers. Im looking to have a young person come and water, feed and clean them during the week for me every 2nd day.I dont have time to spend in there every night cleaning and feeding. Only thing ill be doing of a night is giving them there greens and ringing the birds.

whenever i use my camera the pictures are always to large, so i was thinking this would probably be the case again, and i dont know how to make them smaller.

It's very easy when you upload to photobucket you select the little thing in the drop down box under the upload nbutton that says the 640 x 480 size and then click upload, that way every photo you load will automatically be the right size ;)

I imagine the Hills people are looking after you with lots of advice so I'll limit mine to one suggestion - don't put all those birds down in one go, stagger it a bit, maybe a week apart each batch which will lighten the load and give you more options when moving birds around. With 30 (or 60!) nests ringing chicks could be a nightmare and you don't want paperwork errors. It also eases the load on your baby cage and gives you a chance to assess the chicks in batches instead of hundreds at a time! However you choose to do things, have fun. Jaz

Hello and welcome ;)

I look forward to your pictures.

I have 6 cabinets, but only 3 are filled at the moment. having a quiet season, but am also getting in the show breeding too :)

Have only met a few people from the Hills branch. Shall go to one of there meetings next year but i have been told they are more of an advanced club, and that Blacktown is a good place for me to start as people shall give me help and guidance.

I dont have all of the birds on one premises. they are at 2 location.

Jaz do you show your birds? If so how have you gone? Have you got any images of your birds?

What sort of birds are you trying to breed?

I would love to breed violet pieds. But wanting to just breed pieds in general with great size. Aim is to get a violet yellow face pied.

Yes, the Blacktown club would be good for you (so would we!) but it doesn't hurt to rub shoulders with some of the more experienced hands such as the Hills members. I've been breeding and exhibiting budgerigars for many years with mixed success - a few good places but no grand champions. I'm in the hobby as much for the social contact as for exhibiting. I have just had a boost to my interest and enthusiasm with the erection of a new breeding room and the acquisition of some new, good quality birds. I have had a wonderful breeding season and am waiting for all the chicks to moult through so I can do a proper job of selecting the birds to keep for next season. I have a great many varieties but my main interest is in black-eyed yellows. I haven't yet acquired the skill of posting the images to the forum but will have to do it soon. I would like to photograph ALL my breeding birds individually and have the photographs as part of my breeding records but that's a project I don't have time for at the moment. Violet yellow-faced dominant pieds would be beautiful! But I might suggest you try the Australian YellowFace (or Golden Face) for the best colour contrast (however, body colour might be cleaner with the other type). Maybe we'll cross paths at a show sometime. Jaz

My current birdroom has 37 breeder cabinets.

Do you clean it daily, and give them fresh water everyday?

How long would you have to spend with your birds on a daily or weekly basis having that many birds?

Do you clean it daily, and give them fresh water everyday?

Vacuum floor once or twice a day. Main cage cleaning once week.

Fresh water as needed...budgies foul water pretty fast even with using drinkers. Seed on their beak goes into the water as they drink it and sours the water in no time flat.

How long would you have to spend with your birds on a daily or weekly basis having that many birds?

Half hour in the mornings.....especially to check nests with chicks, checking food and water.

One hour in the evenings...checking nestboxes, breeding cages, restocking food and water, vacuuming floor.

Sometimes checking through the day also as I work from home

How have you gone at the shows? Won many awards?

What type of birds are you aiming to breed, or currently breeding?

If you click on my name and look up my topics you will see all I have posted about my birds including photos. I am classed as a novice at showing but I do pretty well with my birds in shows. I aim to breed quality birds of a show standard and colour does not come into it at this stage. My preference is for pieds.
