Posted November 19, 200816 yr I have placed "Aviary wanted" signs around town and have been checking the local papers for a second hand Aviary. The local hardware store had a small one for $520, which I couldnt afford. Today I noticed one for sale an hours drive from me and went to check it out. It was 2300mm wide 1950mm high and 1550mm deep, the same as this one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Aviary-Skillion-Roo...1742.m153.l1262 As luck turns out it was an ex-show breeder and I also managed to buy 13 cage fronts for making breeding cages, plus trays, perches and 10 breeding boxes (as he is retiring to travel Oz) for the grand ol' price of $240! Woo hoo I am a happy girl and my patience paid off! Now I have to organize a concrete slab etc and wait for hubby to get some time off! In the meantime I will prepare a nice spot in the garden to put it. I'll keep you posted, I go to pick it up on the weekend
November 19, 200816 yr WOOHOO!!! awesome!!! look forward to pics of it when its filled with your birds!!

January 10, 200916 yr Author Looks awesome!!!! It is in a lovely shaded area nearly all day long, so it is in a great position for our hot summers. We have to get a concrete delivery on Monday for the floor and hubby is going to put a slope in it and a half cut plumbing pipe to drain out water when I clean the aviary. Will post more progress shots as they happen!
January 10, 200916 yr The new aviary...took a while but we are getting there! Wonderful !! As you have an overhanging roofline...rig up a hook above the door area and get one of those mozzie nets on a hoop ( the kind they hang over beds ) ...you can hook it up over the door and use it to step through so you creat a safety door effect as you go in and out.

Dave (my husband) is going to build ma a new doorway are to prevent escapees! Also maybe some trellis and perspex as we get hawks and eagles here.
January 11, 200916 yr Gosh I wish I lived where I could have an outdoor avairy... I'm always so jealous when I see nice aviaries like this. Good for you, best of luck with it.
January 11, 200916 yr Chrissy, would you be able to build one out of wood and have it insulated? It snows in England and they tend to use wood and stuff to build their birdrooms outside... surely in the world today there must be some sort of technology to help you out...
January 17, 200916 yr Author Hello! It has been a busy day today with the making of tiered perches and building a dummy doorway area to prevent escapees! When we concreted we sloped the slab and put a channel to divert water for when I am cleaning the aviary and it takes it through a drain hole and pipe outside. Pics.... Drain: Tiered perches: Building the dummy doorway: We are also incorporating a hexagonal aviary onto the side of this aviary as a juvenile flight. Here is the almost finished product: Rear view of the entrance to the aviaries: All of the budgies! (Not the 26 rescue ones however they are being treated in quarantine) Pet types and show breeders, I hope they get along o.k.:

January 17, 200916 yr fantastic! Great job especially with the drain .. I couldn't tell with the photo's but does the hexagon and safety door have cement flooring too? Birds look happy as in there!!!
January 17, 200916 yr Great job with everything just a query have you put wire mesh over the hole for drainage? Wouldn't want to allow access to the mice... or snakes..
January 17, 200916 yr Author fantastic! Great job especially with the drain .. I couldn't tell with the photo's but does the hexagon and safety door have cement flooring too? Birds look happy as in there!!! Thanks, no hexagon Aviary is yet to be completed as is the safety door area (Dave didn't bank on having to make a safety door, so it took longer). Also hex aviary needs rewiring as we had a cockatoo in it and he chewed the wire and escaped much to my distress, he never returned! I hope they are o.k. the pet types have never flown properly (outside of a cage) since I got them about two months ago. They look so tiny and the other bigger birds look like chooks beside them!
