Posted November 18, 200816 yr Well, after you guys recommended us to take our Cookie to the Vet, we've finally been there just few hours ago. We'we been at www.birdvet.com.au short bit past Redfern station (in Sydney), as it is the closest one we've found. Luckily my sisters gave us a ride, so we didn't have to stress Cookie by taking him onto train etc... We came a little early, but the doctor took us in before the original appointment time. She explained pretty much everything, we understood that even though we are foreigners and our English is everything but perfect She recognize that bit near her eye (http://bobr.czweb.org/cookie.jpg) straight away as mites so he has been treated for that with ugly long injection straight to her tummy through her mouth and it looked pretty awful. Then she's taken her saliva and poo and left to do some tests on it. Before that, we've also told her she's been sneezing quite a lot lately. And that's what came up in that test, that she's got canker (trichomoniasis) as well. So there was another injection into her tummy, she's explained more about it and given us water treatment for her for the next week. We made an appointment for another mites treatment in two weeks and left. We really liked the doctor, she was straightforward, said that there is a chance Cookie might choke due to that canker (as there is mucus coming into her mouth) but that it is unlikely. We really appreciated that she was honest. Only thing we were bit surprised was the bill, which ended up at 180, but I guess that's normal here in Australia, isn't it? It was for the consultation, tests, medicines plus one taken home.
November 18, 200816 yr Good to hear she is a good vet The bill when you see an avian vet can be srange sometimes, some of them I think charge too much because they see themselves as specialists and therefore think that it's fine to charge more which I personally don't agree with. I treat scaly mite with vermectin spot on which I buy in a little bottle for $3. That little bottle has so far done about 60 treatments and is still half full! Canker medication is more expensive so that may account for some of the price.
November 18, 200816 yr The cost of the vet visit sounds expensive but a normal cost it would have been just about the same here in the U.S. Glad you were able to get her to an avian vet and figure out what was wrong.
November 18, 200816 yr You can treat canker with roni-vet. It cost about $20 for the plastic container, but that will last you years
