Posted November 16, 200816 yr can i fix this and if so how? She is an "08" bird that was just given to me. Will it affect her in breeding if i decide to use her? You can see ( well i can when i'm holding her) that the bottom beak is there. it's just the top thats the problem.
November 16, 200816 yr She will need to have it reshapened by a vet. do you know why the beak is shaped like that. you may not want to breed with her as it could be a disease. Edited November 16, 200816 yr by **Liv**
November 16, 200816 yr Looks like a victim of severe scalyface left untreated. Please do a clearer photo so we can advise based on the extent of the problem. You dont breed any bird unless in peak condition. To feed babies she needs a workable beak. That beak is not. Its seems to be scalyface gone bad and the beak will need proper vet care and professional trimming as well as being treated for the scalyface. She is going to cost you some money.
November 18, 200816 yr Author I wasn't gonna let her hatch them just breed and lay, I can foster the eggs. She's in top shape aside from the beak. No scaly face. Just the beak thing. I'll contact a pro and find out whats what and how much money they're gonna take me for. Thanks guys
November 18, 200816 yr I thought scaly face too - but if she is an 08 its very severe and fast progressing - it would take a fair bit of time for scaly face to get that bad. Actually, could it be deformed like that from having food stuck under the beak while in the nest?? Can you give a clearer photo please Edited November 18, 200816 yr by **Liv**

Even if she is an 08 bird she can have had scaly develop from January till now.......and it can end up like yours has here I would NOT be using her to breed with. She is not 100%
November 18, 200816 yr Yeah, i agree Kaz. I forget its November already! poor girl - hope you can get her fixed up
November 18, 200816 yr Author vet friend had a look and said that it needs to be reshaped, due to lack of something in her early childhood the beak just hasn't formed properly. Not a worry. said to leave her till next year and breed her to a spare cock bird and he (vet friend) will incubate and raise the chicks. He recons everything will be okay and maybe once her beak has fully reshaped she might even be able to sit her own eggs. She is a little overweight at the moment though, which is why he said to wait till next year to breed her.
