Posted November 15, 200816 yr I have another hen with a large clutch. When I last checked she had 6 eggs...quite large eggs too. Didnt check her properly for a few days, and then heard that familiar cheeping coming from the nest box. A newly hatched chick !! When I looked inside I saw one chick and 10 eggs !! As of today she has 6 chicks and another 5 eggs to go. They all appear to be fertile. Plans are as the eldest two are due for ringing tomorrow and monday...I will ring them and move them into another nest. and same until we even up the nests. That way I can keep track of who is who. I am very pleased as this hen is a split recessive to recessive cock pairing. The hen is a Cec Gearing hen. So fingers crossed we get some nice recessives in the nest. Parents Dad Mum

November 18, 200816 yr Author Eight chicks hatched now out of eleven. Two eldest are in another nestbox being fostered and both the eldest are recessive pieds. Six left in the original nestbox at the moment. Three more eggs to go.
November 18, 200816 yr Author Wow, great news. I told the breeder of the hen today that he put her in his cull cage by mistake as she is very fertile and has eleven eggs and 8 hatched. He said he must have had bad judgement that day
November 18, 200816 yr bad luck for him, great fortune for you. Always good when you can benefit from a Cec Gearing mistake. I figure that he and his wife make so few. My club is having a presentation at our next meeting (friday) from the club president who went to the Gearings aviaries a few months ago. Might be a nice preview for January - LOL. Looking forward to seeing the chicks feather up. Good to see some large recessive pieds
November 19, 200816 yr Great news, at what age do they feather up enough for you to tell if you got recessive pieds.
November 19, 200816 yr Author Great news, at what age do they feather up enough for you to tell if you got recessive pieds. I can already tell that the eldest two are recessive....you can see the different coloured splotches on the wings and back even before pin feathers come in. I will take some pictures tomorrow to show. :sadsorry:
November 19, 200816 yr Author Moved another chick last night so the mum only has 6 in there right now. She has two more eggs to hatch. Three of her older chicks in foster nests.
November 19, 200816 yr Probably a silly question but i am wondering do the parents notice when you take chicks away from them or they seem to forget how many they have?
