December 21, 200816 yr Budgiebuyer09, How long have you been breeding for? I know your just starting out again now but before you stopped how long weer you breeding for? Did I read correctly that you are putting down 40 pairs to breed soon? Lets say they have on average 4 babies each... thats 160 birds... How many of them would you be planning to cull? Starting out with that many birds I guess you won't be line breeding Edited December 21, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks

Starting out with that many birds I guess you won't be line breeding I shall have to wait and see how it goes. Getting the correct breeding environment is important. Hopefully i shall have a good start as alot of the birds are very young, ie no older than 3 years. Most are green ringers. I shall do what most breeders do and keep all babies until they have had there first mult, from there shall get rid of the ones that dont look anything, but dont get rid of many at this stage. always wait a year before i do a cull. I have got good bloodlines so i am expecting good things.
December 21, 200816 yr will you keep them in their lines or will you mix and match after the first pairing?
December 22, 200816 yr will you keep them in their lines or will you mix and match after the first pairing? Alot of the birds are from the same line in one way or another. There is alot of ernie wise blood lines, and Carter and a few others just to name a few. I am wanting to build my own line so it is basically a 5 year plan. It will take a few years to have what i am trying to achieve. I have paid some big $$ to get some pairs and birds that are really good. Wasnt easy getting them off the breeders, and i only got them as they had plenty of brothers and sisters that year from the same birds. It is all trial and error. Everyone has there own theory, but i am wanting to specialise in Dominant Pieds. Violets.
December 22, 200816 yr Just wondering on the price question of how much should you pay for a bird? You seem to be saying about $50 if you are just starting off. Does anyone know what the price would be here in the US? What is $50 (AU) equal to in the US?

To know the going rates for good show type birds you need to get toegther with a budgie club and see what the going rate is in your area.

I guess I was just wondering what $50 is equal to in US. Because a pet style budgie here in the US goes for $17- $25 in the pet stores but hand raised can go for $30 or more... but that's all US dollars. I have one pair of breeding show type budgies but I don't know what their chicks would go for. I know the chicks I have now (pet style) will sell for about $30, and the cockatiel chicks I have will sell for about $100 or so... just didn't know what a show budgie sells for. The two I have were given to me. I'll have to research breeders clubs around here... I don't think they are anything like over there.
