Got a couple of new hens. The green hen is nice and she is split blue which is what I needed short of trying to find a blue hen. The mauve opaline might be a double factor yellowface which can be proven ( or not ) with breeding. The green hen is bigger and better, the mauve is smaller but with the right boy might do well.

I notice that with my Opaline cock his spots are massive and plentiful

Opaline on hens is not hidden since it is sex-linked so if she doesn't have the distinctive V pattern that goes with the opaline gene then no the spots mean nothing.

No, I didnt quite mean that. What I meant was if opaline was somewhere in her distant heritage would that be the reason for the mass of spots. Because a Normal wouldnt have that many spots as a rule :rofl:

Green hen looks nice Kaz…don’t know about that theory of having Opaline in her background…seems to me most of the show types have multiple spots these days, whether it came via Opalines would be hard to tell. Can’t believe you still have room to buy more birds Kaz.

I have reduced numbers Norm, but always space for a better bird. I am very short of hens right now. Running 37 breeding cabinets but not all full due to lack of hens.

I found that my birds that have an abundance of spots like that are like it from their first feathers and it seems to run mainly in one family I have. They get the little halfmoon spots as babies and it turns into lots and lots of good spots when they moult. Most of the babies like this are from a pied/opaline and a normal hen. So opaline in the family but not directly (not visual.)
