Iris Rings In Dom Pieds

Featured Replies

Hi there, just a quick question...Are the iris rings in dom pieds always prominent as what I've seen in other birds? Elmo was thought to be dom pied but I was told the truth would be seen if he developed iris rings. Well, this moring under the bright morning sun I noticed he had iris rings, but when viewed normally you actually can't see them at all. Does this mean he is dom pied or do the rings have to show normally and be seen at all times for him to be so?

I think it was Neville that mentioned all birds have iris rings but just depends whether they're seen or not. I thought that if the iris rings are not visable all the time whether this would make a difference in his mutation.

Thanks

All birds do have iris rings, they are part of the physiology of the eye. Dominant pieds will have visible iris rings, recessive pieds will not. The age at which you can easily see them varies as well, sometimes not until they are over a year.

Ann is right, I always thought that was interesting to say a bird doesn't have an iris ring when you have an iris , but the visiblity of it is key. Do you have an updated picture of your bird?

Hi, picture of Elmo's iris ring below. It can only be seen in the bright morning light. Otherwise his eye looks completely black.

I've had him now for approximately 4 months and he was between 3-6 months when I got him.

I just want to confirm he is dom pied...or not!

I'm sorry for the photo he was very idignant about being manhandled.

Thanks

He is not a dominant pied. His iris ring would be white if he was.......and his cere would be blue by now also if he was dom pied.

PS Who said he was a dominant pied ? as he doesnt look dom pied in these photos :laughter:

Maybe the top picture you'd get away with saying it but definately not the bottom one. I agree with Kaz the cere is a dead giveaway at that age

Hey Kaz, when I first posted his picture it was a bit of a toss up in the decision of dom or rec...I don't know any difference, so hence the clarification of him now. Also am not too knowledgeable of the iris ring subject so that's why my question is asked.

Either way I don't care what he is I think he's gorgeous no matter what! :laughter:

And I'm always up to learning something new...thanks.

The spot where you are geting confused here is that ALL budgies have iris rings you just can't se it normally on a recessive pied because it is dark, on a dom pied it is white. While you can see the ring it isn't white :)
