Nesting Boxes

Featured Replies

I've been searching through some websites and some pet stores and I've seen that some people are using different types of nesting boxes for their budgies. The main difference is that they are either made from wood or plastic. I was wondering which one is actually more preferable for budgies.

Availability and cost also comes into peoples choices. In Australia plastic nestboxes are less easily available than wooden ones in shops. The plastic ones you do find are quite expensive too. Budgies like to chew the wooden ones a little to make them their own....kind of budgie home improvements :D ...cant do that with plastic.

Thanks for the info... although the plastic ones are easier to clean, I guess that budgies would prefer to have wooden ones since they are more like their original nests in the wild.

The main thing is size, we bought some plastic ones which were supposed to be suitable for budgies only to discover that they are way too small even for a pet type to be happy in

We use plastic nest boxes, but the ones we use, according to our supplier, are no longer available unfortunately. We are very happy with them though, as mentioned, the bonus is the ease of cleaning, as well as transparent slides to check on the birds.

The top breeders in Germany and the UK use plastic. But as Kaz said, size is paramount.

My only concern using plastic nest boxes would be that they would get to hot during summer?

Don't mean to hijack the threads, but what are you guy's thoughts on nesting material?

I've read conflicting opinions about wood shavings, etc

I use untreated wood shavings and kitten litter.

The boxes we use are vented in the back and when its warm or chicks are feathered, I remove one of the slides which causes a little more gap and better airflow through the box.

This was the thread I posted, but its all a mute point really, seeing as we cant get our hands on them anymore :party0011:
