Baby Coming Out Nest Box At Four Weeks Old

Featured Replies

Hi my eldest budgie chick Kiwi I found on the cage floor in the corner cheeping and picking at her parents poop and seeds they drop, Lumina and George her parents were freaking out her sibling were screeching their butts off for food, But George and Lumina were to busy stressing about Kiwi. So any way I just popped Kiwi back into the box with her sisters.

Then the next day I heard the over-reacting screeching from the parents, so I went in the room to have a look and there was Kiwi on the cuttle fish bone happyly chewing it(Is it bad for a budgie that young to eat cuttle fish bone?). I put her back in the box again.

Then today I heard the squaking and Kiwi was sat happily again playing with her daddy's tail, then I saw her climb all the way up too the top of the cage and then climb down back into the box so now I just let her stay out the box.

Also she still can't fly

Is it normal for a bird so young to leave the nest box????

Mine have been jumping out before they turn 4 weeks, it's normal :)

Your post bought memories flooding back to me, when our first babies last December came out of the nest on the 4 week mark, I didn't know if it was good or bad. Put them back as you did, then when it happened for a second day, just left them too it. It is great watching them going and returning to the nest. With some of the clutches that I have had as my numbers increased, I sometimes put hatchlings back if I consider them stressing. Our latest 2 clutches I have actually blocked off the nests, as the little monkies are 6 weeks, and still wanting to come and go as they please. They hate me, have this little one that actually lies along the perch, looks so cute, yet so dejected. I am so cruel aren't I.

Okay I was wondering should I put Kiwi in on her own now or do I wait she's eating flying all on her own Also she's bigger than her mom and Dad so I'm wondering if she has inherited her grandpa's show size or does it mean thats how big she'll stay she's 4 weeks and 2 days.

On her own ? Not until she is eating all by herself and not being still fed by parents.

If she is eating all alone and flying she can be seperated from her parents and just watch to be sure she continues to eat.

I won't move her just yet because of the move but I just had to make sure, sorry to bother

Its not a bother Jodie :) You have done well with your breeding.

Get a little cardboard box, like a teabag box, cut the lid off, upturn it and cut archways in all four sides. Put it in the bottom of the cage so the baby can have shelter and protection just in case the parents turn nasty.
