For the new breeders who don't yet know about how to recognise what you have in the nestbox by the appearance of a newly hatched chicks eyes.

 

Ino's ......Lutino, Creamino or Yellowface Albino and Albino all begin with red eyes. This can be seen in a newly hatched chick so you know right from the beginning that you have an ino chick. The actual appearance is kind of like they have no visible eye under the skin of the eyelid. Its very much a bright red under the pink of the skin.

PLUM eyed Chicks

Plum eyes appear in a nestbox when you have either recessive pied inheritance or cinnamon.

I thought that df spangles were born with plum eyes, i have had one born with plum eyes and i think MB has had one as well.

DF spangles can carry cinnamon though, which would account for plum eyes and we need to check it out.

rip how do you tell a brown wing when its matured

i have a spangle 2 year old no spot on head just spangle lite green its got brown eyes and its irise ring is also brown you can just see it it is their could it be a full spangled winged rec pied or a brown wing spangle although its wings look black to me ???

This is extremely timely!! I was planning to do a search about plum eyes, because I have a new cock that I have been trying to figure out. (sorry, no pics yet)

 

He's all yellow, so either DF spangle or DEC. He's obviously NOT lutino, but his eyes have a slight reddish cast, which I take to be plum.

All along I thought he had iris rings, but it's been very hard to tell.

 

So that was what was confusing me, because I didn't think plum eyes and iris rings could come in combination with each other.

 

I am very happy to read this and find out that DF spangles can also have plum eyes!

 

So if I have it straight, we have:

 

plum eyes with no rings means recessive pied. (Or dark eyed clear if solid yellow or white.)

plum eyes with iris rings means cinnamon. (Or double factor spangle if solid yellow or white.)

 

And DF spangle could also have the plum eyes because of masking cinnamon.

 

Now I know what to look for!

Really? DF spangles hatched with plum eyes? As adults they have BLACK eyes - I mean BLACK and not the faintly plum eye (described as "dark" in the standard) of a cinnamon. We are not getting confused with the fact that a huge amount of DF spangles these days are bred from cinnamons are we?

 

Even Terry Martin gives the DF Spangle an alternative name of BLACK-eyed clear. AND makes the distinction between that and a Dark-eyed clear which is born with plum eyes.
