How To Care For Chicks While Away?

Featured Replies

Posted

I am going on two short holidays that are really close together in the next month. One will be for 4 nights and one will be for 3 nights (with 3 night at home inbetween them)

I will have the second round of babies in my cabinets then... and my first show pair will have their babies. What do i do to make sure they are okay for that time? I normally check my birds 2-3 times a day so leaving them for this time is really stessing me.

I will have my mum visit, but other than check food and water, she is not experienced in anything other than seeing if the babies are alive :(

What should i do?? how do breeders go away for short stints?

Hey Liv ... Oooo Bad timing with the holidays ....

Are you able to show mum what to do ... Or is their another breeder that is able to come and check?

I could try and show mum how to pick food from under the beak and look for splayed legs etc. I had so many issues last round i really hope this one will be better

There are a few breeders around here but i don't know them very well yet as i am only new at the club.... I'd feel uncomfortable about letting someone i don't know well into my house and yard while i am not there :o

I will get those self feeding jar thingies and was thinking about mixing budgie starter or some sort of dried food with the seed instead of fresh food for the time??

Do any of the other local breeders have teenage kids that might like to earn some pocket money? In my experience mum or dad almost always does half the work anyway and chances are any kidof a long term budgie breeder will know what to do anyway

When I had to go away for the Budgerigar Nationals and leave Ken in charge  ................

I wrote full notes on every nestbox as to what to do in each nestbox and that breeder cage. I also wrote instructions on a chart and also step by step instructions in a notebook. Ken is famous for getting distracted by tidying up instead of the "important" things like checking budgies. If its going to be hot weather while you are away there is that worry too and you have to plan ahead for that. Expect some losses and make sure the "minder" knows that these things happen and they cannot be blamed for trying.

Kaz, you sound like me when we went on vacation, I had a 2 page instruction note on how to take care of all the pets while we were gone. Good luck Liv, I do believe your mom if capable should know what to look for in signs of trouble though.
