I have my Texas clearbody cock and Albino hen together. I noticed that they were buddies from the start. I was just wondering what behaviours that they display when they are going to mate? Will they make a nest first?

Budgies do not make nests. They explore their surroundings and find the nest you have provided....usually the boy goes nest hunting first and shows it to his hen with a nudge nudge wink wink kind of scenario. Mating behaviour begins soon after. He will get right in her face and head bob and make cute sounds. He will fly about showing off to her. If eager he will try and step on her back, sometimes before she is ready. If she is keen she will accept his in your face kind of approaches...she will accept his kisses and head bobs and feeding of her, and then she will bow low over the perch with her back arched, to accept him in the mating position. With my birds this can happen within moments of introduction or it can take weeks.

Wow I am excited as this is exactly what he is doing it is so cute! She is kissing him back and preening him also. I thought it would take weeks! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a post that described step by step of incubation periods and the like?

lol i love Kaz's explainations of the male finding the nest and yes it can happen very fast, i believe it only takes a female about 10 days to start to lay once they have mated( correct me if i am worng). i have also just introduced a pair into a breeding cabinet and they are showing similar signs, so goodluck and keep us posted.

7 to 10 days to the first egg if they are eager. Eggs every second day until she has the number of eggs she is happy with. She will begin to incubate by around the third egg and then you count 18-21 days from the time she sits all the time keeping the eggs warm consistently...............then hatching.

No these two aren't. Hopefully there will be lovely clearbody chicks too! Not that I would care any little chicks will make me happy!
