Posted November 9, 200816 yr Hello All.. I'm a little unsure about one of my bubs (buddy) and would like some advice/thoughts.. Buddy was plucked from the nest while still featherless along with his sibling, the heat here was knocking them off like flies.. and hes been inside being hand raised.. Ive lost track of exactly how old he is (bad me) although i took this photo of him on October the 5th (not sure if that helps) Hes the one in the middle Anyway as hes got his feathers through they are not quite "normal" and rather tatty looking.. I was wondering if this was French Moult or something else i may not be aware of eg:diet? He and his sibling who has feathered up normal are being raised on Vetafarm Neocare .. This is Buddy today His lil feathers have a sort of twisted up almost dry tatty look to them.. I'm thinking French moult but unsure.. Sorry about the photo quality, i hope they are enough for you too see whats going on Oh and also all of his body is pretty bald still except for a few tatty feathers on his back and his "fluffies" Any input will be greatly appreciated
November 9, 200816 yr I dont think french moult as he wouldnt have the flights. Seems to be nutritional from stress and her bad start in life maybe. And he is a she. PS good to see you here
November 9, 200816 yr Author Oh Thank GOODNESS for that.. His parents were having HUGE problems and all the chicks were really dehydrated and not really healthy when i pulled them in so I'm not surprised its nutritional.. I'm excited for some reason that he is a she YAY ... awww gosh I'm totally somehow even more smitten with HER now ma lil baby girl Ill have to get a photo of HER sibling which we always call He and see what sex s/he is also.. I'm not good at it in pieds until they are at least a few years old and its REALLY obvious
November 9, 200816 yr Extra vitamins and protein a huge must right now. Some whole egg powder or at very least some egg in the rearing mix.....protein needed for feather growth. Edited November 9, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 9, 200816 yr Author "whole egg powder" as in the stuff you can buy at the supermarket which is used in cooking as a fresh egg substitute?
November 9, 200816 yr "whole egg powder" as in the stuff you can buy at the supermarket which is used in cooking as a fresh egg substitute? If it is actual whole egg powder YES...not the egg substitute pretend stuff
November 9, 200816 yr Author Okay thanks for that ill check in the health food section at the shops to see if they have any tomorrow .. DOH sounds like something that i should really already be keeping in the fridge
November 9, 200816 yr I agree with Kaz on it not looking like FM ..... Protein is a MUST for feather growth! ..... If you can't get WHOLE EGG POWDER you can use soybean powder -
November 9, 200816 yr Author Okay excelent.. I will look for one or the other tomorrow.. The formula hes having says on the packet it contains Min Crude Protein 21% Not exactly sure if thats good or not though hahaaa I really appreciate the advice.. Ive been telling everyone today about my baby GIRL teehee
November 9, 200816 yr My babies have aso been handraised on Neocare and it has been great I think it's a really good product. If you can't get whole egg powder, egg whte powder would be K as it is the highest protien part of the egg. Otherwise hard boil an egg and hen put it in the blender or barmix it so it's rally fine and add a little to the Neocare.
November 9, 200816 yr Author :budgiedance: Notepad and pen in hand writing this all down.. Ill be heading to the shops soon to see what i can find (fingers crossed).. Glad to also hear of someone else thats using Neocare to raise chicks on (PHEWW) I was beginning to doubt the product.. I also have ummm whats it called Oh i think its just Paswells Parrot Hand Raising Mix.. any thoughts on which is better OR is there a particular one that you would recommend? .. should i have made a new post for the extra questions? hahah sorry
November 9, 200816 yr Paswells i think is better only because I have used that one ... Crude protein is a part of the milk if i can remember correctly
November 9, 200816 yr Neocare has all those great probiotics and predigestives which is why I prefer it. I used to live in Wagga (where Vetafarm is located) and had my lorikeet sexed at their avian clinic. I must say I think they are a fantastic company and their products are very good. Every product is well thought out and works, they won't sell any useless crud and I thinks that's a very important trait for a pet products company to have.

I was actually thinking the same thing when i purchased it.. I do use a lot of their products and also find them great in an emergency as they have often put things on the plane for me to get it that same day which has been at times life saving.. I also know lots of people who SWEAR by the Paswells brand and i do also use quite a few of their products from bird pellets to wallaby formula but i am still unsure what would be BEST for my bubs.. now though with everyones advice on things to add etc to the formulas i feel much more confident .. THANKS HEAPS
