We recently were given a 7 to 9 week old budgie as we have an aviary with 10 other Budgies and a variety of other birds. When the bird was given to us it was explained by the original owners that their other birds had attacked this one and plucked the feathers from behind its head.

 

We have had this bird for two weeks now (in a single cage) and there is still blood behind his head as it is continually scratching. Can anyone recommend a cure or assistance on this.

Is it possible to post a picture of the plucked budgie?

Normally its the parents who do the plucking at it can take some time for the feathers to regrow - if they regrow.

 

if there is any current bleeding still, there may be broken blood feathers that need to be pulled out.

pictures will help a lot if you can post some

It could have mites... a photo would help heaps

Good on you for keeping her quarantined :laughter:. A picture would help as suggested. Maybe it is trying to heal and she keeps itching it maybe there is more too it but our members can help you out with that.

Check and make sure your picture is still in photobucket and you didn't delete it that is what it is showing not your picture.

Looks like an open wound that wont heal. Needs antibiotics and vet to check for signs of necrosis of the tissues around the wound site. Best of luck

aww poor little guy - hope he recovers fully

While you are waiting to get into the vet you can try and discourage scratching by making a mini elizabethan collar, out of a cardboard cereal box will be fine if it's only needed for a day or two. Instead of pointing the collar forwards so it fans around the face put it on the other way so it fans over the top of the wing bases, this should make scratching with the feet in that area difficult.

Oh mate .... That does look nasty - Have you clean the area yet?

You can use a rather mild saline solution or a warm salt water treatment - Not 100% if you should do it prior to the vets though ... But I think ..... (think being the word) that their looks like a blood ball, like a cyst or a blood clot there?

Went to vets today, we need to use a diluted betadine solution and watch for infection (antibiotics).

and to also use a collar.

 

Little bloke is trying to fly now also, so I think he was just the runt and got off to a bad start, but he is trying to catch up! If he dosnt pick up fully or if we cant put him in the avairy we will give him to friends who have fallen in love with him.

I know this is asking a lot, but can we get a picture of him flying in the aviary? We all love the fact that the little guy made it, especially after that picture you showed us of the bleeding area on the back of the head. we all were very worried at that point. So congrats, but a picture woudl be awesome.

These are some general first aid principles for treating skin wounds:

 

If it is a fresh wound stop bleeding and clean it up with salt water removing any debris to reduce risk of infection.

If it is an old wound, remove any pus or debris, and antiseptic such as betadine can be applied to the scab to prevent or treat infection - be careful with the use of antiseptic medications in sensitive areas and take care to minimise ingestion of medications.

Protect the wound from further damage by trauma from picking, scratching, other birds, excessive heat and overexposure to sunlight since the skin is exposed and damaged it will burn more easily
